A. Announcement

 

1) Announcement: Staff Relationship Committee invites staff suggestions by tomorrow noo

 

Greeting from the Staff Relationship Committee!!

 

The main objective of the Staff Relations Committee (SRC) is to advise on Staff-related issues and provide a direct link between the Staff body and AIT management. Fortunately, Prof. Yamamoto, Interim President has provided a platform called "AIT Stakeholder Forum", where SRC can convey your suggestions/concerns/issues/appreciation for further consideration.

 

The last SRC virtual meeting with all the staff was convened on 19 January 2022 and the minutes of the meeting are attached to this email for your reference. The first AIT Stakeholder Forum meeting was held on 4 November 2022, where SRC conveyed most of the suggestions/concerns raised by the staff to the management. 

 

Firstly, SRC members would sincerely apologize for not being able to call for another meeting, as the appointed SRC Chair resigned and the Interim Chair for the SRC was recently appointed. However, SRC takes this opportunity to invite staff to let SRC members know your suggestions/concerns/issues/appreciation to us by sending an email to "bsireesha@ait.ac.th" who is currently appointed as Interim Chair by tomorrow 14 March 2023 noon. SRC assures to convey the suggestions to the AIT Management through the AIT Stakeholder Forum meeting to be held tomorrow afternoon. We do apologize for the short notice.

 

SRC assures all the staff to maintain the confidentiality of the request and we look forward to hearing your views/suggestions that you think should be conveyed to the management.

2) The South & Southeast Asia Region Webinar on  “Learning from the Experiences of Bangladesh and The Philippines in Management of Treated Wastewater Data.”

 

GWSC would like to invite you to attend the South & Southeast Asia Region Webinar on  “Learning from the Experiences of Bangladesh and The Philippines in Management of Treated Wastewater Data.”This webinar is going to be held TODAY( 13th March 2023) from 14:00 to 16:00 hrs Bangkok Time GMT+7 (Virtual). 

 

 Wastewater treatment and its monitoring are neglected areas of the water cycle. In general, the sector has suffered from many decades of neglect, which has resulted in woefully inadequate treatment and discharge in many countries. Inadequate wastewater treatment and discharge are causing significant damage to the environment as well as to human health and the economy, even in developed economies. As new threats are also identified in the form of priority and emerging pollutants in urban and industrial (treated) wastewater effluents, strong efforts must be made to improve wastewater management, treatment, and reuse. 

 

The ultimate objective of this framework is to help countries achieve Target 6.3 by promoting wastewater safe treatment and reuse among sanitation and water utilities, through stimulated investment. The program of activities will benefit utilities generating valuable data that, to some extent, are already informing governmental institutions, ministries of water/environment, or equivalent institutions, for the preparation of national statistics on wastewater production and treatment. The Urban Wastewater 2030 initiative will develop and issue a “Call for Action” for governments, water professionals, and financiers to take action on the improvement of sustainable wastewater services and therefore contribute to the SDG 6 Global Framework for Acceleration.

3) Unveiling the Spectrum: Embracing Diversity in Sexuality and Gender

 

This semester SU aspires to create a gender-sensitive campus and announces an introductory crash course on gender, sexuality, and inclusion in general under the theme Unveiling the Spectrum: Embracing Diversity in Sexuality and Gender.

 

The aim of this course is to discuss power and identity, gender and consent as well as Sexual Harassment. As the course is extremely dynamic, there is an open independence in the choice of participation in the segment of the course or all three courses to have a holistic understanding of Gender, Sexuality, and Identity. SU is very excited about the course and they look forward to your excitement and participation as well!!!

4) UN Water 2023: Accelerating the achievement of SDG6 through partnerships

 

The SDG6 Research and Innovation Marathon Relay

 

Global Research and Innovation Priorities to Achieve SDG6: A world-wide marathon relay of ideas and recommendations on SDG6 acceleration

 

In March 2023, there will be a unique occasion for the first time in more than 40 years, the General Assembly of the United Nations will debate the challenges of the freshwater crisis and its solutions. In 2020 Secretary-General António Guterres announced his concern with the delays with which the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being achieved. He called on the world to accelerate, particularly the water SDG (SDG6), as water crosscuts and is key to almost all other SDGs. Five accelerators were proposed: Finance, Data and Information, Capacity Development, Innovation, and Governance.

 

In just 24 hours, we will go around the world and connect researchers to debate the research needed to accelerate the five pillars of the acceleration framework. We will start in New York City on the 20 March from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center in West Harlem and end approximately 24 hours later back in New York at the famed Roosevelt House in mid-town Manhattan.

 

The marathon relay event will take place in blocks of 2 hours over 24 hours (20-21 March 2023), where a virtual baton will be passed on to meeting participants distributed over different time zones. Although the event will be of interest to all scholars working in the water sector (SDG6), participants from the corporate and governmental sectors and researchers in other fields (other SDGs) are also welcome.

 

The 2-hour time slot for Southeast Asia (SEA)/China will be on 21 March 2023 from 0900-1100h (Bangkok time, GMT+7). The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, is the manager of the SEA/China time zone session. To dive deep into the accelerators within the available time, the discussion during the time zone session will concentrate on TWO accelerators – Capacity Development and Innovation. We, however, will also discuss other accelerators – Finance, Data and Information, and Governance from the perspectives of Capacity Development and Innovation.
