1) The third edition of the Seismic Performance of Building Model Competition
Date: July 29, 2025
Venue: Structural Engineering Laboratory, AIT
Register Here: https://tinyurl.com/seismic-competition-3
We are excited to announce the third edition of the Seismic Performance of Building Model Competition, hosted by the Structural Engineering Forum, AIT. This international event brings together bright engineering minds from across Asia to test and showcase their skills in earthquake-resistant design.
In this unique hands-on competition, participants build structural models with an innovative load transfer system using Balsa wood with the goal of maximizing seismic performance. The true test of innovation and structural integrity comes when these models are subjected to real-time shaking on our shake table, simulating earthquake conditions. The model that survives the most intense shaking wins.

2024: Participation of 17 teams from 6 countries, with on-campus mentoring and cross-cultural exchanges.
(See highlights here)
2023: Participation of 13 teams from 4 countries with a first-ever event of its kind in AIT.
(See highlights here)
Each year, this event has grown not only in participation but also in its impact while fostering international collaboration, academic exposure, and real-world learning. Students gain practical experience using AIT lab facilities, enhance their understanding of structural behaviour and build meaningful academic connections.
This year’s competition promises to be the most vibrant yet, with a greater number of teams. Participants will also receive logistical support from AIT, including airport pickup, lab access, and all other living arrangements. Dedicated mentors from second year (AIT master’s students) will be assigned often sharing the same national background as participants who will be guiding teams through the process, ensuring a smoother and more enriching experience.
Beyond the competition, this event cultivates long-term academic bonds, opens doors for future collaborations, and introduces undergraduate students and faculty from different countries to the unique research and learning environment at AIT. It is a platform to inspire the next generation of structural engineers and showcase AIT as a hub for innovative engineering education. So, we invite everyone to witness the energy, creativity, and global spirit Seismic Competition 3.0 will bring.
