His Excellency Dr. Suvit Maesincee, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Government of Thailand, who is also the initiator of Thailand 4.0, has accepted the Institute's invitation to visit AIT on 30 August, 2016 and to deliver a Special Lecture on the occasion.

(iii) Seminar on “Introduction to Eco‐political and Economic aspects of Natural Resources Management with examples from Southeast Asia”: 30 Aug 2016
A seminar on “Introduction to Eco‐political and Economic aspects of Natural Resources Management with examples from Southeast Asia” will be delivered by Kai Wegerich, Senior Researcher, International Water Management Institute (IWMI) on Tuesday, 30 August 2016, from 13:00-14:00 hr, at SERD Seminar Room S101.
The presentation is meant to be an introduction and it will present on outline of a potential course on eco‐political and economic aspects of natural resources management in the context of Southeast Asia. Based on recent popular culture, ‘Avatar’, different themes of the movie are highlighted and put into context of topics relevant to different theories. These theories are also drawn upon in eco‐political aspects of Natural Resources Management (NRM), which is more widely referred to as political ecology. Different themes of political ecology are distinguished.
A preliminary literature review explores political ecology regarding different aspects of water resources (dam development, irrigation systems, river basins) and forests management within Southeast Asia. Some initial key observations are offered.
Interested persons are welcome to the seminar and NRM students are required to attend.
(iv) Blood Donation: 6 Sept. 2016
The Thai Red Cross Society has been working with volunteer students and staff to collect units of blood from the AIT community. The bloodmobile visits AIT every three months, four times a year, to collect enough units to supply the constant demand for blood.
The next visit for blood donation is scheduled on Tuesday 6 September 2016, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the parking lot in front of the AIT Conference Center.
Give blood! You'll experience a fulfilling sense of contribution. And the donation process takes only half an hour.

Please find below the announcement regarding the Sumitomo Foundation, Japan Grant for Fiscal Year 2016 for Japan Related Research Projects:
Purpose of the Program:
The program aims at enhancing mutual understanding between Asian countries and Japan through promoting research projects in the field of the social sciences or humanities that are related to Japan.
Eligible Projects for Application:
Any research project to be carried out by individual or a group in the field of the social sciences or humanities related to Japan.
Qualification of Applicant:
Researcher shall be of Asian (non-Japanese) nationality, living outside Japan. Awarded researcher must conduct the proposed research by himself or herself.
Fiscal 2016 Program:
Application period: September 1 ~ October 31, 2016
Grant period: One year (April 2017 through March 2018), but can be extended by another one year maximum if required.
Grant budget: Approximately 50 million Japanese Yen in total (Maximum 2 million Japanese Yen per Project).

The Application Form duly filled in and signed shall be submitted together with a letter of recommendation, free-form from a person with an academic background by registered airmail.

B. Announcements
(i) Pray for Myanmar (from AIT President’s Email)
25 August 2016
The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is deeply saddened by the widespread damage caused by the powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar this evening near the town of Chauk, on the Ayeyarwaddy River south of the ancient capital of Bagan.
I feel so sad to read that in Bagan, known as the "City of 4 Million Pagodas", nearly 100 pagodas, mostly built between the 11th and 13th centuries, had been damaged.
On behalf of the AIT community, I pray for Myanmar and convey my deepest condolences and sympathies to the Government and people of Myanmar, particularly to those affected by this disaster which is still unfolding. Our thoughts and prayers are with our 892 alumni in Myanmar, friends and institutional partners.
AIT enjoys a longstanding and close relationship with Government of Myanmar and stands ready to provide any assistance that it can in this time of need.

(iii) SET Welcomes a Visiting Professor to ISE – Prof. Szuder Andrei
The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) welcomes Prof. Szuder Andrei, who joined AIT as a Visiting Professor in Industrial Systems Engineering
Prof. Szuder Andrei received a Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering) degree from University Claude Bernard -Ecole Centrale de Lyon , France, 1977 and a PhD (Industrial Engineering) from Polytechnic University of Jassy. Romania ,1974. His master degree is in Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering from University, Politehnica, Bucharest, Romania 1969; He has also completed a postgraduate Diploma in Education.University of Bucharest, Faculty of Philosophy,1982.
He was Visiting faculty at several Romanian universities, Ecole Centrale de Lyon-ECL,France-, Ecole Centrale de Nantes-ECN, France, Ecole Nationale d’Ingenieurs de Saint Etienne -ENISE, France, University of Toledo-USA, University of Patras -Greece.
He is founding and Board member of the Romanian Committee of Tribology. 1985, Member of the French Society of Tribology. 1985, , Member of American Society of Manufacturing Engineers – SME 1997, Founding and member of Romanian Concurrent Engineering Association. 1997, Director of the Scientific Council of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry -2007
His research interests are: Industrial Engineering and Management particularly, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Development of international projects involving High Education Institutions and the Industry, especially European Union funded projects

Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines and Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), Heidelberg University, Germany, are jointly organizing a summer school in Manila, Philippines from 3-8 October 2016.
The Summer School brings together experts from Germany and the Philippines to lecture on various topics of Scientific Computing.
Main topics for Summer School on Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing are “Partial Differential Equations with application in Environmental Physics”.
