1) Special Presentation on "2D Nanomaterial-Based Nanocomposites for Antibacterial Activity" by Dr. Atanu Naskar, 7 Oct 2025, 1.30pm, via Zoom

We are pleased to invite you to attend a special presentation on “2D Nanomaterial-Based Nanocomposites for Antibacterial Activity” by Dr. Atanu Naskar, Research Fellow, Department of Radiology, Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA.

Schedule:
Date: Tuesday, 7 October 2025
Time: 13:30 – 14:00 hrs

For those who are interested, please join the special presentation online via Zoom using the details below:
Zoom Meeting ID: 939 4580 5379
Passcode: Fac-search

Abstract:
The wave of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has shown immense potential in terms of application-oriented research work. In this respect, researchers have utilized graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, black phosphorus (BP), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and others for various biomedical applications including photothermal therapy, drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging due to its excellent physicochemical properties. Moreover, the long-standing issue of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens and their alarming increase combined with the dearth of new effective antibiotics have put a heavy burden on the health system and urgent need for the development of alternatives to antibiotics.

Regarding this, the 2D nanomaterial can be a potential nanoweapon against the MDR pathogens. Inspired by advantageous properties of 2D nanomaterials, different 2D nanomaterial assembled nanocomposites [(i) BP based CuS, (ii) MoS2 based ZnO and coated with extracellular vesicle of bacteria, and (iii) Ag incorporated ZnO–graphene nanocomposite] were prepared. The preparation was performed with low temperature solution synthesis method and resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy with elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. The prepared materials were evaluated for their efficacy against type strains and MDR pathogens. The nanocomposites showed an immense potential against bacterial pathogens and could help in the fight against MDR pathogens. Therefore, the synthesized 2D nanomaterial-based nanocomposites has the potential to eradicate drug resistant pathogens.

We look forward to your participation in this informative session.

7) Week-2 Waste Segregation Feedback – Yellow Bin Observations & Community Appreciation

Dear AIT Community,

The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) is pleased to share the results of our ongoing monitoring of the new Waste Management Model as committed, particularly the use of the yellow bins (plastic & paper). With the valuable support of OSC student assistants and volunteers, observations were made across dormitories, faculty/staff housing, and academic areas.

Key Observations
Student Dormitories:
We are delighted to note that student dorms are the best-performing area in adhering to the segregation model. Your effort is highly commendable. However, we observed Styrofoam disposal in Dorm K and Dorm E. Please note that Styrofoam cannot be recycled, and OSC sincerely encourages the ban of Styrofoam on campus which must be avoided in the yellow bins.

Staff & Faculty Housing:
Overall performance is acceptable, with a few exceptions:

ST12: Presence of wood pieces.

ST10: Styrofoam contamination.

Playground near Faculty Housing: Food waste (e.g., banana peels) mixed in.

Academic Area:
Most locations are satisfactory, except:

OFAM: Contamination with glass bottles and Styrofoam.

Cafeteria: Electrical wires and food waste mixed with recyclables.

Quick Important Note: The community and offices are encouraged to inform the maids and other outsourced staff and vendors of the new waste management policy and more compliance with the behavior.
Overall Performance
Encouragingly, 80–85% of the bins reviewed demonstrate responsible segregation behavior. This is a strong indicator of the community’s commitment to AIT’s sustainability goals, and OSC deeply appreciates your cooperation.

Token of Appreciation
As a gesture of thanks, OSC will be distributing 50 small-size bins free of cost to students to segregate waste at the dorm on first come first-served basis. To ensure fairness, each request will be cross-verified with pictures of the respective dormitory’s segregation efforts. It can be collected from the OSC office on Monday, 29 Sept 2025; however, please leave the bin in the dorm when you graduate.

You can view the pictures from the monitoring activity here: Observation Photos Folder, and glance can be observed in the attached PDF

OSC sincerely thanks the entire community for your encouraging participation and requests your continued effort to further improve segregation practices. Together, we can make AIT a model sustainable campus.

8) New Campus Waste segregation Policy – Your full cooperation is a mandatory for AIT’s Sustainable Future

Email from Director OSC on 19 September 2025

Dear AIT Community,
The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) is pleased to launch AIT’s new Waste Management Policy for waste segregation and disposal, a crucial step toward building a sustainable and responsible campus. Effective immediately, a three-bin system has been placed at 101 campus locations:

Green Bin – Food and bio-waste

Yellow Bin – Plastic and paper recyclables

Blue Bin – General waste

Clear disposal directions are posted on most of the bins. We urge everyone to segregate waste at home, in residential areas, and in offices before disposal. The current priority is plastics and paper, as Phase 1 of our waste management goal is to recycle the largest portion of plastics and paper waste collected in the yellow bins.

May be an image of text

From the date of this announcement, the next three weeks will serve as an observation period to assess your support in properly disposing of plastic and paper waste into the yellow bins with the help of OFAM Janitorial staff while they collect the garbage. Once we achieve satisfactory results, OSC will invite the contracted recycling company to evaluate and initiate the collection process.

Your full cooperation is a mandatory exercise to turn this vision into an implementable reality. The AIT community is the key stakeholder in this effort. We urge every AITIAN to take personal responsibility by adding extra bins at home for waste segregation; these bins can be purchased starting at 30 B or purchased from OSC upon request. Together, we can ensure that our collective actions contribute to the environment and set a benchmark for sustainable practices.

We have attached the approved long-term plan for implementing campus waste management for your reference. In the second phase of the implementation process, yellow bin waste segregation bins will be distributed at the main offices. More details will be announced and coordinated soon. We sincerely await AIT community involvement and feedback on how to implement the plan effectively and achieve tangible results. Please send an email to director-osc@ait.ac.th or call at 6008 for your valuable suggestions.

The waste management hierarchy prioritizes waste prevention, followed by reuse, recycling, recovery, and finally disposal. OSC sincerely encourages adapting the first two steps in our daily lives.

May be a graphic of text that says "Prevent Reduce Reuse is Recycle C Recover Recover ជា Dispose"

Let us work hand in hand to dispose of the waste at AITs in a responsible manner. Thank you for your commitment and support.
