9) Week 3 Yellow Bin Monitoring — OSC campus waste summary
Email for the Director OSC on 10 October 2025
Dear AIT Community,
The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) shares the results of our Week 3 monitoring of the Waste Management Model, with emphasis on yellow bins (plastic & paper). Observations were carried out across student dormitories, faculty/staff housing, and academic areas with support from OSC student assistants and volunteers.
Key Reminders
-
NO Styrofoam in the yellow bin; it cannot be recycled.
-
Empty the containers of food waste or liquid waste into the green bin before placing them in the yellow bins.
-
Do not mix different types of waste in one plastic bag—segregate items properly at home and in the office
-
The plastic cannot be recycled if it is mixed with food waste, and it also contaminates other plastic waste disposed of by others.
-
In residential areas, if possible, use a transparent garbage bag for plastic and paper waste
-
Please take a moment to look at the stickers on the bin before you dispose of waste
Key Observations
Student Dormitories
-
Overall good segregation behavior; continued improvement in recycling habits.
-
Please continue to ensure recyclables are clean and empty before placing them in yellow bins.
Staff and Faculty Housing
-
General performance remains positive, but we see some black garbage bags, where we cannot assess if they're mixed with other waste.
-
Continue to avoid Styrofoam and ensure the correct segregation of recyclables.
-
Please inform your maid of the new disposal policy for the right bin
Academic and Other Areas
-
Styrofoam disposal was observed in the Agriculture Lab and Telecommunications areas.
-
Some bins contained mixed items or unemptied containers before disposal.
-
Please place food waste only in green bins and avoid putting non-recyclables into yellow bins.
-
Steep behavioural responsibility is expected from the students and employees to comply with the segregation policy
-
OFAM is also requested to remind janitorial staff working in the academic area of the segregation policy for disposing of waste collected in offices.
Overall Performance
-
Almost 90% of bins reviewed show responsible segregation behavior, but there is scope for overall improvement, with emphasis on the Academic & administrative side behavior of disposing of waste
-
This demonstrates the community's notable commitment to responsible waste segregation and disposal. It reflects the community’s growing commitment to AIT’s sustainable campus, but there is room for improvement, and we need your cooperation
OSC sincerely thanks the entire community for your support and asks for your continued effort to further improve segregation practices. Together we can make AIT a model sustainable campus."
