13) Week 4 Waste Management Update – Yellow Bin Practices -change can be challenging, it's not insurmountable

Dear AIT Community,

The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) shares the results of our Week 4 monitoring of the Waste Management Model, with a continued focus on yellow bins (plastic and paper recyclables). With the support of OSC student assistants and volunteers, we conducted observations across student dormitories, faculty and staff housing, and academic areas. This week's newsletter highlights the key issues and good practices; please give your precious 5 min to have a quick glance at the attached report.

While change can be challenging, it's not insurmountable. Your little commitment will be a great encouragement to the OSC volunteer team working tirelessly, to do more for campus sustainability.

Overall Performance

  • The segregation performance has dropped compared to previous weeks, with food waste contamination identified as the most common issue.
  • Approximately 80% of the bins demonstrated responsible segregation behavior; however, there is significant room for improvement.
  • The main challenge remains contaminated plastics and leftover beverages before disposal.

Key Reminders

  • Contaminated plastic with no greasy waste—if rinsed, dispose of in yellow; otherwise, please dispose of in the blue bin
  • Empty containers before recycling. Food or liquid residues contaminate recyclables, rendering them non-recyclable.
  • NO Styrofoam in the yellow bin. Styrofoam cannot be recycled and should not be placed in yellow bins.
  • Segregate properly at home. Your support is needed—make it a habit—inform your family members, maid,
  • Review bin labels. Please take a moment to read the labels on the stickers before disposing of waste.

Key Observations

Student Dormitories

  • The behavior regarding segregation is generally positive; however, dirty food containers and food wraps were repeatedly found in the yellow bins at the standard dorm
  • Used tissues were also observed in the recycling bins.
  • Please ensure that recyclables are clean, dry, and empty before disposal.

Staff and Faculty Housing

  • Overall performance remains steady, but Styrofoam containers and mixed waste were observed in a bin near house 28, and .ST10, 11, 12
  • Transparent bags are encouraged for disposal of plastic in the yellow bin.
  • Residents are encouraged to remind their household members and maids handling waste about the updated disposal policy.

Academic and Other Areas

  • Food-contaminated containers and Styrofoam were found in several locations, including laboratories and offices.
  • Glass bottles were disposed of in the yellow bin designated for the computer science building, which is strictly prohibited.
  • Some bins contained a mix of items or had unemptied containers.
  • OFAM is requested to remind janitorial staff to follow the segregation policy when collecting waste from offices.

By keeping food waste out of yellow bins and ensuring that containers are emptied before recycling, we can strengthen our waste management system and move closer to making AIT a model sustainable campus. OSC thanks the AIT community for their continued support and cooperation. Your efforts are making a difference, but we need the participation and involvement of the AIT community to ensure that we embark on our next step: transferring recyclable plastic to the recycling plant.
