8) Observation Report : Strengthening Waste Segregation Need – Collective Responsibility for a Sustainable AIT
The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) has completed the February 2026 Yellow Bin Observation Report, as attached. We sincerely appreciate community members who are actively practicing responsible waste segregation. However, the observations indicate that further collective improvement is essential. As we work toward transforming AIT into a model living laboratory campus, waste management cannot be achieved through policy alone—it requires consistent and responsible action from every member of our community.
Key Campus-Wide Issues Observed
-
Food containers and drink cups are disposed of without emptying, contaminating recyclables
-
Use of black/opaque bags inside yellow bins, hindering sorting
-
Mixing different waste types in one bag
-
Non-recyclables (Styrofoam, tissues, general waste) placed in yellow bins
-
Glass bottles and aluminum cans are incorrectly placed in yellow bins
Specific Area Concerns
-
Dorm A–K: Black bags, food waste, and dry leaves in yellow bins
-
Dorm M–Y: Black bags, Styrofoam, and food contamination
-
Student Village 1–2: Food waste contamination
-
Student Village 3: Black bags and Styrofoam were observed
-
Faculty & Staff Housing: Black bags and food contamination affecting recyclability
-
Academic Areas: Cups not rinsed/dried; glass, cans, and tissues misplaced
Positive Note
Recyclable plastics are visible in many bins across campus, indicating growing awareness and participation—this is commendable and encouraging.
All these months since September 2025 have been dedicated to awareness and behavior transformation. From March onward, the contracted recycling company will begin structured collection from yellow bins. However, based on current observations, contamination levels may lead to rejection of recyclables.
Gentle Reminder:
-
Yellow Bin → Paper & clean plastics only
-
Green Bin → Organic waste
-
Blue Bin → Glass, metal, PVC, tissues, and all other general waste
We sincerely urge maximum cooperation across academic and residential areas. Management is investing effort and resources to foster change—let us match this with responsible action.
Together, we can strengthen AIT’s journey toward a truly sustainable and net-zero campus.
