6) Week-1 Waste Segregation Feedback – Yellow Bin Observations & Community Appreciation
Email from Director, OSC on 26 September 2025
Dear AIT Community,
The Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) is pleased to share the results of our ongoing monitoring of the new Waste Management Model as committed, particularly the use of the yellow bins (plastic & paper). With the valuable support of OSC student assistants and volunteers, observations were made across dormitories, faculty/staff housing, and academic areas.
Key Observations
-
Student Dormitories:
We are delighted to note that student dorms are the best-performing area in adhering to the segregation model. Your effort is highly commendable. However, we observed Styrofoam disposal in Dorm K and Dorm E. Please note that Styrofoam cannot be recycled, and OSC sincerely encourages the ban of Styrofoam on campus which must be avoided in the yellow bins. -
Staff & Faculty Housing:
Overall performance is acceptable, with a few exceptions:-
ST12: Presence of wood pieces.
-
ST10: Styrofoam contamination.
-
Playground near Faculty Housing: Food waste (e.g., banana peels) mixed in.
-
-
Academic Area:
Most locations are satisfactory, except: -
OFAM: Contamination with glass bottles and Styrofoam.
-
Cafeteria: Electrical wires and food waste mixed with recyclables.
Overall Performance
Encouragingly, 80–85% of the bins reviewed demonstrate responsible segregation behavior. This is a strong indicator of the community’s commitment to AIT’s sustainability goals, and OSC deeply appreciates your cooperation.
Token of Appreciation
As a gesture of thanks, OSC will be distributing 50 small-size bins free of cost to students to segregate waste at the dorm on first come first-served basis. To ensure fairness, each request will be cross-verified with pictures of the respective dormitory’s segregation efforts. It can be collected from the OSC office on Monday, 29 Sept 2025; however, please leave the bin in the dorm when you graduate.
You can view the pictures from the monitoring activity here: Observation Photos Folder, and glance can be observed in the attached PDF
OSC sincerely thanks the entire community for your encouraging participation and requests your continued effort to further improve segregation practices. Together, we can make AIT a model sustainable campus.
