(v) Change to WhatsApp Backup in Google Drive

Email from Helpdesk (23 Aug. 2018)

Dear users,

Due to a new agreement between WhatsApp and Google, WhatsApp backups will no longer count against Google Drive storage quota. However, any WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage. This policy will go into effect for all users on November 12, 2018 though some users may see the quota benefits earlier.

To avoid the loss of any backups, we recommend that users manually back up WhatsApp before November 12, 2018.

Recommended Actions:

1. Confirm that your current Android WhatsApp client is backed up (https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/android/28000019/?category=5245251)

 (b)  Special lecture on “Development of low cost sensing technology for biological activity monitoring” by Dr. Soichiro Tsuda, Osaka University, Japan:  22 October 2018

Environmental Engineering and Management Program, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, will organize a special lecture  “Development of low cost sensing technology for biological activity monitoring” by Dr.  Soichiro Tsuda, Osaka University, Japan.  It will be held as follow:

Date:     Monday, 22 October 2018
Time:    15.00 – 16.00 hrs.
Venue:  S101, SERD Seminar Room

Abstract:

Biology has been more and more automated in recent years in the age of "Big Data". However, the state-of-the-art automated experimental platforms are still costly and yet not readily available at standard biology labs.

Speaker Profile:

Dr. So (Soichiro) Tsuda is a specially-appointed associate professor in Osaka University and has established an interdisciplinary expertise across biology (microbiology and biochemistry) and engineering (bio-monitoring, 3D printing). Throughout his research career, he has been developing automated systems for online monitoring of biological activities. For example, he has developed microfluidic cell culture systems for single-cellular slime mold with integrated in-line electrical impedance measurement, which were applied to a whole-cell biosensor for the detection of environmental toxins. His whole-cell bio-hybrid systems were featured in a BBC Four documentary "After Life: The Strange Science of Decay", and various other online media. He has been developing automated cell culture systems for understanding evolutionary mechanism of bacterial adaptation against alternating drug stresses, which was published from Nature Communications (where he is a corresponding author) [2]. He was awarded with several fellowship grants, including Lord Kelvin-Adam Smith Research Fellowship (UK) and the Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) grant (Japan).

All interested are welcome to this special lecture.
