(i)   Thank You: Visit of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to AIT, 27 April 2018 - Opening of the Modernized AIT Library - AIT Campus Renaissance

Email from President (4 May 2018)

Dear Members of the AIT Community,

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was blessed with auspicious Royal Patronage when Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn formally inaugurated the modernized AIT Library, the AIT Clock Tower, and the new AIT Gate on 27 April 2018. On behalf of the Institute, I would like to convey my sincere thanks to all faculty and staff members, and students, who were able to join us on this very special occasion, and celebrate in the renaissance of the Institute.

We especially thank the AITIS pupils and teachers, who highlighted the international character of our Institute during Her Royal Highness Princess’ visit. Donned in their national attires, they welcome HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and her motorcade’s entry to AIT. They also served as happy foregrounds at the AIT Main Gate and AIT Clock Tower when Her Royal Highness officially inaugurated the AIT Modernized Library, the Institute’s Gate and Clock Tower, which were installed as part of the rehabilitation process after the 2011 flood.

The inauguration of the modernized Library was an important milestone for AIT, since the entire ground floor facilities had been inundated by the ravaging flood of 2011. The drive to create a new Library received Royal Patronage in January 2015, when HRH Princess Sirindhorn blessed the campaign and provided seed money of 1 million THB to launch the campaign. HRH also graciously accepted to serve as the Honorary Chair of International Advisory Committee of the AIT Library Modernization, and the Library Fundraising campaign ultimately emerged as the most successful fundraising event in AIT history, collecting nearly 80 million Thai Baht. The day marked the grand finale when HRH Princess Sirindhorn also honored major donors in the fundraising campaign, awarding certificates to individuals and corporates that had donated at least 1 million Thai Baht each.

Throughout the two-hour event, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was in blithe spirit and joyful disposition while witnessing the developments at the modern AIT Library and renaissance of the whole campus. Like other alumni, Her Royal Highness was also very concerned about the crisis AIT faced after the disastrous flood in 2011.

The visit of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, which was attended by 15 ambassadors and a large number of dignitaries, was widely reported on national television channels and other media. The event, showcasing AIT’s rise again, and the ensuing coverage and publicity, greatly enhanced the image and reputation of the Institute among the civil servants and the general public of our host country Thailand and beyond.

An article which was featured on the AIT website and my own post on the visit of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn are available at the below links:

A video titled “AIT rises again,” which shows the journey from the flooded campus to a modernized Library, was especially prepared for the occasion and can be viewed at:

Once again, I wish to convey my gratitude to all members of the AIT community, who have rendered their full support to AIT and continue to reach out in different ways and means. Our tasks and responsibilities will continue as we share the same aim to move forward for the betterment and brighter future of the institute.

Sincerely,

Professor Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai
President
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)
