(i)    THE 2018 BENDER LECTURE

Email from President (19 Feb. 2018)

Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2018
Time: 1:00– 4:00 pm
Venue: AIT Conference Center, Auditorium

Dear Friends

I would like to invite former colleagues, alumni and friends to attend the 2018 Bender Lecture and to witness the honoring of AIT’s third President, Professor Robert B. Banks.
Please reserve your seat by calling 02-524-6367.

THE 2018 BENDER LECTURE

The 2018 Bender Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Adrian Ray Chamberlain on ‘SEATO-GSE AND AIT: Beginnings and Visions for the Future’.
Dr. Chamberlain was a former President of the Colorado State University (CSU) from 1969 until 1980. Colorado State University was assigned to administer the United States contribution for the establishment and operation of the Asian Institute of Technology during its formative period from 1958 to 1975, under the CSU/AID Contract. AIT Founding President Milton E. Bender was a close colleague of Dr. Chamberlain as they together charted out the future plan for AIT as the first international postgraduate institute of Asia. In the life of an educational institution, sixteen years is a short period of time. For the AIT, however, it was during this early period that the foundations for future directions were established.

PRE-BENDER LECTURE – NAMING CEREMONY OF ROBERT B. BANKS AUDITORIUM

Professor Banks is remembered for the important contributions he made towards the growth and development of AIT during his presidency. When AIT suffered its first major financial crisis in 1974-5, AIT’s founding President Professor Milton E Bender Jr. had to return for a year, to control the precarious situation. Professor Robert B Banks was called back to serve as Vice President and Provost, and subsequently designated as the next President of AIT in 1976.
Among Professor Bank’s many accomplishments, his major contributions include the expansion of AIT academic programs, the wider involvement of donor countries, the greater increase of faculty strength and student population, and the improvement of AIT's infrastructure. All these set a solid foundation for the next 25-year period of continued expansion and financial stability for AIT.
President Bob Banks, aside from being an established academician, was a true gentleman, and an accomplished diplomat. Together with Mrs. Gunta Banks, they have represented AIT magnificently and helped built the proud legacy of AIT today.
I am grateful to the AIT Board of Trustees for having unanimously agreed to name the main AIT Auditorium, the “Robert B Banks Auditorium”, in recognition of the valuable contributions made to AIT by former President Professor Banks.
