I wish to inform members of the community that the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting convened on 11 January 2018, has approved the appointment of the final presidential candidate recommended by the Board appointed AIT Presidential Search Committee (PSC). The new President will assume office from 1 September 2018, for an initial term of 4 years.
A public announcement to introduce the President-designate will be made within the first half of May 2018.

(ii) FROM LABORATORY TO PRACTICE
Message from AIT President (29 Jan. 2018)
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was founded in 1959 as an international postgraduate institute with a mission for the development of the region. In its early years when all faculty were seconded from the west, AIT started out as a teaching university and gradually turned into research-oriented university. Recently AIT has shifted towards more industrial relevance, to ensure that its research output can be used in real practice.
A case in point is its recent signing of MOU with Department of Industrial Works of the Royal Thai Government. The two sides agreed to establish a strategic partnership to address a broad range of environmental issues in Thailand. The main focus is on the highly toxic emission from industries, called “dioxin”. These pollutants are generated as by-products of the combustion process, and are usually discharged into air, water, residue and solid wastes. Thus, this partnership will allow AIT’s researchers from the AIT-IDEA Environmental Laboratory to measure the dioxins being emitted into the air by the industry in Bangkok and its greater area. DIW Director, Mr. Mongkol Pruekwatana, also suggested that this exercise can also be expanded to cover the emerging Easter Economic Corridor (EEC) in the future.
This industrial collaboration is in line with a current theme of AIT’s endeavor in “R&D for the Sustainable Future of Mankind”.
(ii) AIT Confers the Title of Emeritus Professor to Prof. A.T.M. Nurul Amin

Dear Members of the AIT Community,
I am pleased to announce the bestowal of the title Emeritus Professor on Prof. A.T.M. Nurul Amin following approval by the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 11 January 2018.
The title Emeritus Professor is conferred on AIT full Professors on retirement after their continuous distinguished service at AIT. The award of the title is conferred to those who have achieved outstanding international professional status and have made significant academic contributions to the Institute through teaching, publications and professional work.
Prof. Amin had obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Manitoba, Winnepeg, Canada in 1982. He joined AIT as an Assistant Professor in 1987 and was promoted to full Professor in 1998. He had served as a full Professor at AIT for 10 years and served AIT as a full-time faculty member for 21 years. Prof. Amin graduated 11 PhD and 96 master’s students. He served as an external examiner to 15 doctoral students from universities in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Prof. Amin has a total of 176 publications and other contributions which include 2 books, 18 journal articles, 11 book chapters, 13 conference proceedings, 67 other publications, and 65 other contributions of record. His publication areas are in urban informal sector, economics of rural-urban relations, urbanizations, urban employment, urban poverty, and designing of public policy interventions for environmental protection and management. Prof. Amin delivered a Professorial Lecture at AIT in 2007 and was conferred by AIT the status of Distinguished Adjunct Professor in 2015.
Prof. Amin’s specific outstanding technical and professional accomplishments and contributions include, amongst others, the following services: member of the International Advisory Board for UN-Habitat flagship publication, State of World Cities, 2008/2009: Harmonious Cities; member of the United Nations Center for Regional Development (UNCRD) Expert Group on Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) in 2006; Senior UN Fellow of UNCRD in 1994/1995 and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) Draft Committee Member of the State of 3R Report in Asia and the Pacific Countries and Bangladesh Expert on 3R (2014-2017). He served as guest editor of the Regional Development Dialogue and was consulted by international organizations for national and international assignments such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), as well as by the UNDP, UNESCO, UNICEF, GHK International, UNCRD and IGES. Prof. Amin served in various significant capacities at AIT such as Chair of the Human Settlements Development Division, as Founding Coordinator the Urban Environmental Management Program and as Chair of the AIT Academic Senate. During 2003-2005, he was the Project Director of one of the most successful and large scale sponsored projects received by AIT, viz. Southeast-Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) Project. Even after retiring from AIT, Prof. Amin continued to remain active in the academe and currently holds the position of Professor and Chairperson of the Economics and Social Sciences Department at BRAC University, Bangladesh.

(iii) Provision of Services: GRU/OHCR

Dear members of the AIT community,
Late last year, a report on the non-transparent handling of fees collected from service users of the Government Relations Unit (GRU), Office of Host Country Relations (OHCR), as well as on the behavior of a GRU staff, was received. The President accordingly formed a Fact Finding Committee to verify the facts of the report, as well as to recommend if the complaints warrant any disciplinary actions and advise on best future practices.
With no indisputable evidence or testimony to support the allegation, the Fact Finding Committee cannot establish that any of the GRU staff behaved unprofessionally towards members of the AIT community while providing services. The Committee considers that the defensive behavior of a GRU staff may have been a reaction to a serious allegation of missing payments.
The Institute cannot tolerate nor be involved in any unacceptable / unlawful practices. All students and their dependents, with the exception of physically or mentally challenged persons, are encouraged to comply with the specified regulations of relevant government agencies of our host country. The Institute shall continue to facilitate foreign students and their dependents to go in person to the Immigration Office for visa processing.
It is affirmed that the Institute should continue its practice of safekeeping the passports of its students and of the students’ dependents at GRU to ensure prompt attention to immigration notices. The Institute shall uphold the security arrangements for handling and holding of these passports. The OHCR has delegated a staff from whom students / dependents can collect their passports for legitimate / authorized reasons. Requests for passports outside of office hours shall entail charges. The Institute shall issue official receipts for these charges (at the earliest office hour following receipt of payment). Unless absolutely necessary and in case of an emergency, students are discouraged to collect their or their dependents’ passports outside working hours.
I wish to assure the community that the Institute, especially through its Service Centers, is dedicated in the provision of quality service to its users. I encourage everyone to not hesitate to provide their feedback and comments on the performance of the Institute Administrative Units and offer recommendations to improve services. I have requested the Director of the Office of Human Resources Services to organize workshops with respect to service promptness and politeness / courtesy of staff.

(vi) AIT Photographs from the Flood

As announced in the AIT Management Team meeting of 19 January 2018, a Flood Memorial Garden is being constructed in AIT. It will be located adjacent to the AIT Conference Center.
With this email, we are soliciting photographs of AIT for possible inclusion in the Flood Memorial Garden. The photographs will cover the story of the AIT flood — right from the preparations to combat the flood, the inundation, the devastation caused in the campus, and post-flood reconstruction.
If you have any photographs of AIT related to the Great Thailand Flood of 2011, please share the photograph with us. You can email it to floodmemorial@ait.ac.th .or use Google Drive to share your photographs.

(vii) Condolence: Passing away of the mother of Ms. Boonrieng Penglee and Mr. Ruen Penglee

AIT Community would like to express heartfelt condolences to Ms. Boonrieng Penglee and Mr. Ruen Penglee whose mother, Mrs. Boontham Penglee, passed away on Tuesday 31, January 2018.
Mrs. Boontham Penglee was also a former staff at Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM), School of Environmental Resources and Development (SERD).
(viii) RAEng Call for Application: UK-TH Industry Academia Partnership Programme
Greetings from the Royal Academy of Engineering!
Under its remit as a delivery partner of the Newton Fund, the Academy has partnered with the Office for Higher Education Commission to enhance engineering teaching, research and innovation outcomes in Thai universities through building bilateral industry-academia linkages. This programme also aims to foster greater ties between engineering research and innovation stakeholders in both countries.
Requests for Proposals open
Our overall objective for the Programme is to strengthen capacity and develop capabilities within Thai engineering higher education and research institutions to carry out excellent teaching, research and innovation-related activities through collaboration with industry and UK counterparts.
Through this Programme the Academy aims to support case studies of excellence in bilateral collaboration which in themselves will generate significant long term benefit, as well as produce models replicable by others and generate lessons which can help inform bilateral and national-level higher education, research and innovation policy.
A call for proposals for the programme is now open.
Types of activities supported
This call offers financial support for travel, subsistence and salary support costs related to visits and exchanges that support collaborative activities amongst industry and academic partners in Thailand and the UK. Under this call we will support proposals that fit with one or more of the IAPP’s identified outcome areas:
1. Enhanced industry input into engineering curricula and teaching in Thai universities to improve the quality and uptake of practical engineering skills and help develop a talent pipeline for emerging and/ or currently skill-scarce industries;
2. Develop new partnerships and strengthen bilateral collaboration in engineering research and knowledge-sharing between industry and academia counterparts to develop new capabilities within Thai universities;
3. Formation of deep, strategic bilateral partnerships between industry and academia around application-inspired engineering research and innovation which aims to solve economic and social development challenges faced by Thailand or globally; and
4. Improved industry-academia interface to help systemically foster deeper engagement amongst actors in the innovation eco-systems of both countries and create different models of industry-academic engagement for wider sharing and adoption.
The lead applicant will be an individual at a Thai university which must propose a means of collaboration with co-applicants that meet the above-identified Programme outcome areas. Co-applicants must include at least one local industry partner and at least one UK university or research institution partner. Additional partners are not obliged but are encouraged, especially the involvement of UK industry partners.
Applications aligned to Thailand 4.0 strategy in action for strengthening competitiveness of industry in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) are particularly encouraged.
Industry partners are defined broadly and may be institutions of any size within private, public or NGO sectors.
As a result of the call, a series of grants in the range of GBP £10,000 to GBP £50,000 will be issued. The project duration will not exceed 24 months, including all project activities and final reporting. The proposed start date for the project must be within April 2018 and all projects, including submission of reports, must be completed by end of April 30th 2020.

Applications can only be submitted by the lead institution and must be submitted via the Academy's online grants system. Applicants should ensure they read the Guidance Notes so they gain full understanding of the overall Programme objectives and the different materials needed for the application before submitting their application.
All applicants are invited to submit their proposals via the Academy's online grant system before 9am (GMT) on 8th February, 2018.

* The EEC consists of the three Eastern provinces Rayong, Chonburi, and Chachoengsao with a combined area of 13,285 square kilometers. (c) Blood Donation Announcement: 7 Mar. 2018

The Thai Red Cross Society has been working with volunteer students and staff to collect units of blood from the AIT community. The bloodmobile visits AIT every three months, four times a year, hoping to collect enough units to supply the constant demand for blood.
We again would like to ask for your help. The next visit for blood donation is scheduled on Wednesday, 7th March 2018, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the parking lot in front of the AIT Conference Center.
Give blood! You'll experience a fulfilling sense of contribution. And the donation process isn't time-consuming. It only takes about half an hour.

Mr. Abdul Twab Balakarzai, Deputy Minister Academic Affairs (WEM Alumnus) / 12, 16 February 2018 / to further strengthen existing partnership to build capacity for higher education in Afghanistan through post graduate education, targeted research of priority of Afghanistan and short term trainings and workshops; and to consult and address issues of MoHE Afghan Scholars at AIT and receive progress made by the students.
(i) IP Phone system down time
Email from AIT Helpdesk (2 Feb. 2018)
The Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT) plans to relocate the fiber optic cable to the new location in front of the main gate on 8 February 2018 from 16:00-21:00 hrs. Since this relocation requires cutting and splicing of the fiber cable, no phone communication (incoming/outgoing) with anyone outside AIT can be made during the above mentioned period, however internal phone communication will not be affected.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused.
(ii) New AITCC Annex & renovation of car park near Arcade
A new AITCC Annex building will be constructed opposite to AIT swimming Pool/AIT Solutions. The construction work will start from 1 October 2017 and expected to be completed by April 2018. To prepare the area for construction, the car park area opposite to swimming pool/AIT Solutions will be demolished partially and a new sewage line will be laid from Arcade area.
During the process of this work, the area will be barricaded and there might be some disturbance as well as noise.
Please be also informed that currently partial section of car park area opposite to Arcade is being renovated. It may take a week to complete the work and the area will be closed.
