A. Announcements

 

 (i) New School of Engineering and Technology Dean Appointed

 

Professor Dieter Trau of the National University of Singapore (NUS) will be the next Dean of the AIT School of Engineering and Technology (SET), starting on July 1, 2019. He will have the rank of Professor and will also be the new Director of the AIT Entrepreneurship Center, which will be set up later this year.

Professor Trau is currently an Associate Professor with tenure and Associate Head Research in the Biomedical Engineering Department of the National University of Singapore.   He got his engineering degree in Chemical and Bioengineering from the FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Germany, in 1994 and a PhD degree in Chemistry from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2001.

Professor Trau is an accomplished researcher in the field of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering and is also an entrepreneur who is the holder of numerous patents and founder of several companies.  (See his CV at https://goo.gl/upkbMi ).

President Eden Y. Woon commented:  “AIT is extremely excited to have someone who has excelled both in academic research and in entrepreneurship to join our faculty, coming to us from the prestigious NUS.  As the new Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology, he will help inject innovation into SET’s teaching and research, working with the faculty and the new Vice President for Academic Affairs.  As the new Director of the Entrepreneurship Center, he will work with the Vice President for Knowledge Transfer to build the AIT start-up ecosystem to be used by our students and academics.

Let us warmly welcome Professor Trau when he comes on board.

 

(ii) SET welcomes a Visiting Faculty – Dr. Ravi Kant

 

School of Engineering and Technology (SET) welcomes Dr. Ravi Kant who joined Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE) Programme as a Visiting Assistant Professor. He is seconded to AIT by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Dr. Ravi Kant is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the S. V. National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) Surat, India. He received his Ph.D. degree from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) Allahabad, India. He has about 10 years of teaching and research experience. His areas of interest include Decision Sciences, Supply Chain Management, Knowledge Management, Total Quality Management & Six Sigma. He has guided 09 Ph.D. and 40 M.Tech students. He has authored more than 140 research papers published in reputed international journals and conference proceedings. He has authored 02 text books on Operations Research and Industrial Engineering. He has developed Industrial Management Course in Pedagogy Framework under the National Mission Project on Education through ICT (Main Phase), Government of India. He has conducted 10 short term training programs and 4 international conferences. He has received awards for his research works like top 10 Most Outstanding Researcher-2017 in India under the category of Business, Management and Accounting by Carrier360, Special Award-2014 and Dr J. M. Mahajan Award -2017 for continuous innovative development of Industrial Engineering in its operation and significant encouragement to the industries in India by Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Navi Mumbai.

During his stay at ISE/AIT, Dr. Ravi Kant will teach Inventory and Logistic Management (AT 72.09).

(iv)  Updates on the plastic bottle wastes initiative

Email from AIT Solutions (31 Jan. 2019)

Dear AIT Community,

An initiative was launched to help AIT become plastic bottle waste free by collecting all empty bottles and giving people reward point for every bottle they return. 

The purpose of this initiative is not to encourage people to buy and drink more plastic bottles but to get rid of all the plastic bottle wastes we have in the campus and to have a channel where people can properly segregate their plastic bottle wastes and turn into reward points.

The main goal is to use the plastic bottle wastes for research and experimentation purposes.

We will accept plastic bottles until 30 April 2019 and will resume in the next semester.

(v) Blog Contest for Students: What Makes AIT Special?

"What Makes AIT Special" is the theme of our blog contest this semester.

What is it that makes AIT so special? And what makes it unique? Is it the campus or is it the people? Or a combination of both?

Write a blog post for us, add a few photographs, give it a catchy headline, and mail it to us. The best entry will win a cash prize of 3000 THB, while the second and third entries get 2000 THB and 1000 THB each, The best entry will also be posted on the AIT website. Your entries will be judged for originality and creativity.

The ideal post ranges between 300-600 words, but we will not penalize if creativity demands that you violate these parameters.

(iii)TRAININGS

(a) Thai Courses: Jan – Mar. 2019

The Language Center is pleased to announce the opening of Thai Courses for Beginners.

Survival Thai

The 7-week survival Thai course is an introduction to Thai languages which will cover basic words, phrases, daily and simple expressions and basic grammatical structures to communicate with Thais. The purpose of the course is to introduce participants to the principles and basic of Thai language as used in everyday conversation. Moreover, the course will prepare them to feel confident to communicate with Thais and feel at ease while staying in Thailand.

- Monday and Wednesday, twice a week
- From 17:00 – 18:30
- Total 20 hours
- Course fee: 2,000 baht

Thai Reading and Writing

This course is the introduction to reading and writing. It is the 7-week course that is designed for those who do not know how to read and write Thai language. The participants will practice reading letters and learn how to spell words and make up words.
- 5 February  – 21 March 2019
- Tuesday and Thursday, twice a week
- From 17:00 – 18:30
- Total 20 hours
-  Course fee: 2,000 baht

(b) Professional Training Program on Advanced Shrimp Farming: 3 – 10 Mar. 2019

A professional training program on advanced shrimp farming will be organized by AIT Extension from 03-10 March 2019 at AIT.
“Advanced Shrimp Farming” is a one-week long professional training program, which has been designed to address not only the lack of know-how and issues with farming practices but also to meet the specific needs and requirements for the development of this venture in the region. The program will cover the state of the art of farming practices, existing good practices, innovation and advanced technologies in farming and shrimp healthcare along with planning and management of environmental issues with shrimp farming.

 (i) Schedule for repair rooftop project at PPT and ISE

Email from OFAM (1 Feb. 2019)

Please be informed that the subcontractor will start to repair the rooftop of PPT building and ISE building as per the below schedule on 4th February 2019. During this time, there may be loud noise and dust due to the repair of the rooftop. So we request the kind cooperation of the people using the PPT and ISE building as well the surrounding areas and please close the room and windows properly in both ISE and PPT building to avoid dust.

- Fill 2nd layer with chemical polyurethane – 2nd step: 11 Feb. 2019

ISE Bldg.

     1. Dismantle the old materials on the rooftop: 12 – 14 Feb. 2019
     2. Prepare the surface on the rooftop: 14 – 15 Feb. 2019
     3. Adjust level of the rooftop: 15 – 16 Feb. 2019
     4. Fill 1st layer with chemical polyurethane – 1st step: 16 – 18 Feb. 2019
     5. Fill 2nd layer with chemical polyurethane – 2nd step: 19 Feb. 2019

 

(ii) Improvement project: Cleaning and Painting of Dorm J Building

Email from OFAM (11 Oct. 2018)

Please be informed that subcontractor will start the improvement project at Dorm J, to clean and paint the exterior and corridors of the building.

Project has started on 12 October 2018 (Friday)
Expected to finish soon.

During this time there may be loud noise and dust around the area work. Residents of Dorm J are requested to close their doors and windows properly. 

Apologies for any inconvenience that it may cause.

After this dorm, we will continue with dorm E and Dorm K, which will be announced later.
