(i) BE BOLD FOR CHANGE
Message from President: 8 Mar. 2017
AIT joins the world to celebrate International Women's Day 2017 today.
For this year, all are asked to help forge a better working world - a more inclusive, gender equal world. The motto is #BeBoldForChange.
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has been very bold for change, judging from the progress from its traditional almost-all-male graduates to a much more gender balance, as we moved along its 57 years in existence.
Today, about 30% (6,191) of our alumni population of 22,301 are female, and I am sure this percentage will keep increasing.
However, we still need to forge more gender balance on our faculty body.
(ii) Let help build a good culture at AIT
Email from President: 8 Mar. 2017
Dear Students
Yesterday I brought some guests to tour our library. Unfortunately we happen to witness some bad habits of library users. I sincerely feel that we need to address them before they become our culture.
All along, I have been very proud of AIT students about the way they use the cafeteria and the Snack Bar, especially when they all clean up the table before leaving.
If you ever visited food courts, or fast food restaurants in Bangkok, you saw customers leaving the dirty plates and stuff on the tables waiting for the cleaning persons to clean up. Believe me - I knew some friends of mine doing the same, despite the fact that they used to clean up the table after they finished eating, when they were studying in the western countries.
Thus, it is not the person, but it is the culture of the place.
The batch of AIT students that first used this new cafeteria have created a good culture for their future students to follow, and it becomes AIT's culture. Now you are the first batch of students using this modern library, why don't you together build a good culture for AIT so our library will always be a decent place for us.
For examples:
(1) In group study rooms, I saw some students leaving messy writing on the white board after they finished using the rooms. Let make it a habit that whenever you finish the use, wipe clean the white board, collect all the trashes and tidy up the chairs, etc. Let's make this AIT's culture.
(2) We saw dirty water spilt over the floor all the time in the library toilet. There is a good reason that the entire space of the library has to be dry and clean as much as possible. In any organization, the cleanliness of the toilet reflects the quality of its culture.
(3) Like other libraries, we provide drinking fountain for students. The library prohibits food and other drinks except clean water. Not only spilt food stains the desk and floor, it creates bad smells that may irritate other users. That's why we prepare lockers for you to keep your snacks and other food. So please take out what you really need from your bag and store your bag in the locker. This will save the library staff from having to check all the bags.
I admit that I really feel happy to receive many messages from students how they have enjoyed our modernized library. Let's work together to keep the library a place we are all proud of. This will help boost the Administration the will to improve other facilities in the campus in order to serve the students.
Let us build a culture of care and togetherness in our small global village without border.
With kind regards,
Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai
AIT President
