WEEK# 41, 19 – 25 October 2020
In this issue:
1) 17 Oct 2020 Update on the AIT OQ
Email from Director, Office of Academic Administration
Dear AIT Family:
The community will recall that the AIT COVID-19 Task Force took the initiative to be extra cautious and decided to implement additional measures for a group of students who were on the same flight as the last student who tested positive on the second test for COVID-19 on 8 October. These measures entailed a further 7-day quarantine in addition to the mandatory 14-day stay at OQ, as well as an additional COVID-19 test. The TF wishes to inform you that one other student from that group has tested positive from the third test on 14 October taken during the extended quarantine period. These two most recent cases sat in the same row on their flight to Thailand.
This most recent positive-case student was transported on 16 October from the OQ by a Thammasat University Hospital (TUH) ambulance for treatment at TUH. The first student on that flight who tested positive on 8 October has since tested negative at TUH after 6 days and has returned to AIT OQ on 15 October for 14 days of quarantine. The rest of the students from the same flight have all tested negative and already completed all quarantine requirements and have left OQ.
Therefore, in TUH at present for treatment are two students -- this latest 14 October case and a previous 6 October case. Our thoughts are with them for their quick and complete recovery.
With these recent developments, the TF wishes to advise our students, who are still overseas and are contemplating to come or return to AIT, to refer to the 11 October 2020 message from the Vice President for Administration on Further Advice on the AIT OQ. In order to minimize the very stressful consequences if they test positive after their arrival at AIT / Thailand, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that they heed this advice, such as to limit their exposure to any possible uncertainties as they prepare their travels, which includes voluntary self-isolation prior to departing to Thailand, to make sure that they are fully healthy and to stay home if they do have or have experienced previous symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to those who have, as well as to exhibit maximum care when traveling (including while at the airport and on the plane).
We remain appreciative of the cooperation of the entire AIT community. We also want to recognize the sacrifices of our OQ staff who are following heightened safety precautionary measures as they carefully and safely carry out their respective duties and responsibilities in accordance with the regulations / guidelines prescribed by the Thai Ministry of Public Health, to assure the safety of our quarantined students and the AIT community.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. But in order to protect the AIT community and yourself, you MUST continue to be vigilant with social distancing, wear face masks at all times on or off campus, practice regular personal hygiene, and avoid crowded places.
