Dear Members of the AIT Community,
I am pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Barbara Igel and Dr. Weerakorn Ongsakul from the rank of Associate Professor to Full Professor, following the approval of the Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 16th February 2017.
Dr. Igel joined the School of Management of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of the joint program with Punjab College of Business Administration (PCBA) in 1993. She obtained her Dr. rer. pol. (~PhD Economics), Freie Universitaet Berlin (West) in 1989. Dr. Igel took both her master’s and bachelor degrees, viz. Dipl. Volkswirt (~MA Economics) and Vordiplom (~BA Economics) from the Technische Universitaet Berlin (West) in 1984 and 1982, respectively. Dr. Igel’s research encompasses the areas of managing technological innovation, knowledge management for innovation, impact of TQM on innovation, impact of culture on innovation, and entrepreneurship in new technology development. She had served as Dean of the School of Management (SOM) from 2008 to June 2013.
Dr. Weerakorn joined the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as an Assistant Professor in the Energy Program of the School of Environment, Resources and Development in January 2001. He obtained both his Ph.D. and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, U.S.A. in 1994, and 1991, respectively. Dr. Weerakorn graduated from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand with the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering in 1988. Dr. Weerakorn’s research encompasses the areas of artificial intelligence applications in power system optimization, parallel processing applications, power system operation and control, and power system restructuring and deregulation. He served as Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) from September 2009 to June 2013, and is currently serving as the Secretary General of the Greater Mekong Subregion Academic and Research Network (GMSARN) since May 2006.
Dr. Igel and Dr. Weerakorn’s promotion cases were considered following the process specified in the P&P Statement on the Procedure for Evaluation of Faculty for Promotion (PA-1-2-2).

Conferment of Emeritus Professorship
Following approval by the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 16 February 2017, I am pleased to announce, the bestowal of the title Emeritus Professor on Prof. Karl E. Weber, Prof. Gajendra Singh and Prof. Tawatchai Tingsanchali.
The title Emeritus Professor is conferred on AIT full Professors on retirement after continuous distinguished service. The award of the title will be conferred to those who have achieved outstanding international professional status and have made significant academic contributions to the Institute through teaching, publications and professional work.

Professor Karl E. Weber
Prof. Weber had obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology (summa cum laude) from Ruperto-Carola University in Heidelberg, Germany in 1966. He joined AIT as an Associate Professor in February 1978 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1983. He had served as a Full Professor at AIT for about 16 years, and had graduated 17 Ph.D. and 132 master’s students. His publication record includes 16 books, 36 refereed journal articles, 15 book chapters, 17 conference proceedings, 68 other publications, and 100+ other published contributions. As founding Dean, School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), he was instrumental in the curriculum reform and development of the School. Prof. Weber also served as Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Vice President for Management. He also had managed and administered sizeable donor-supported programmes, notably in co-operation with Canadian Universities Consortium Partnership Project (CUC-CIDA) and Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Technische
Zusammenarbeit (GTZ).
Professor Gajendra Singh
Prof. Singh gained his Ph.D. from University of California in Davis, California, USA in 1973. He joined AIT as an Assistant Professor in 1975 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1988. He had served as a Full Professor at AIT for about 16 years, and had graduated 12 Ph.D. and 160 master’s students. His publication record includes 80 refereed journal articles, 2 books, 4 book chapters, 6 international conference proceedings edited, and more than 200 papers presented at national and international meetings and conferences. Prof. Singh had received a number of awards and international recognitions, namely, Eminent Engineer Award (by the Institution of Engineers, India, 2009), Massey Ferguson Educational Gold Medal Award (by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, 2006), Most Distinguished Alumni Award (by the G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, India, 1997), Emil Mrak International Award (for distinguished career by the University of California, Davis, USA, 1991), the ASAE Kishida International Award (for outstanding contributions to food and fiber production, improved living and education of the people outside U.S.A., 1990), and the Gold Medal by the Indian Society of Agricultural Engineers (1994-95).
Professor Tawatchai Tingsanchali
Prof. Tawatchai obtained his Doctor of Engineering in Water Resources Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology in 1975. He joined AIT as an Assistant Professor in 1975 and was promoted to Full Professor in 1988. He had served as a Full Professor at AIT for about 19 years, and had graduated 13 Ph.D. and 128 master’s students. His publication record includes 70 refereed journal articles, 9 chapters in books, 1 monograph, 192 papers in conference proceedings, 4 international conference proceedings books (editor/co-editor), 8 papers in workshops/seminars, etc.
Prof.Tawatchai has received a number of awards and international recognitions for his contributions in advancing knowledge and practice in his field, to include amongst others, the following: Prestigious Research Scholarship Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for Scientific Research Work at the Institute for Hydromechanics, the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (Sept 1983-Aug 1984), Royal Decoration: Companion (Fourth Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn from H.M. King Bhumibol of Thailand for Outstanding Accomplishment and Contribution in Research, an Elected Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), an Elected Fellow of International Water Resources Association (IWRA), Honorary Life Fellowship Award from the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO, 2004), the Certificate and Award for the Best Researcher in Engineering and Industrial Research of Thailand in 2001 from the National Research Council of Thailand.

(iv) Library - Special Edition Newsletter
Since the campaign for the AIT modernization campaign was launched, Office of Media and Communications (OMCO) has been regularly sharing news about the progress of the AIT fundraising campaign, as well as publishing regular reports on the progress of the library modernization.
OMCO has now compiled the relevant material from our website, social media, and other platforms to produce a Special Edition of the AIT Library Newsletter. The publication can be downloaded from the AIT website.

(vii) Customer Satisfaction Survey for OFAM Service contractors and facilities
Office of Facilities and Assets Management (OFAM) manages the operation and maintenance of AIT infrastructure and facilities. Most of the maintenance services such as technical maintenance, janitorial services, landscape services, Security services, AITCC operations management are outsourced. OFAM asses the performance of all the contractors and facilities based on various Key Performance Indicators (KPI). One of the key indicators for their performance is customer satisfaction.
The feedback from the AIT community will help OFAM to evaluate the performance of the contractors appropriately and their comments, will help OFAM to focus on the areas to be improved. Thereby members of AIT community are requested to spare 5 to 10 min of their valuable time to fill in the survey questionnaires through the link below.

(x) 2016 Personal Income Tax – IMPORTANT
Please be reminded that the deadline of 2016 Personal Income tax filing will be on March 31, 2017.
Payroll now has already finished your a) Withholding income tax certificate and b) Draft PND 91 to guide your tax filing (created by IT Department). The documents will be delivered to you no later than this week.
You can either submitted the tax filing on line or by hard copy. On-line is encouraged. However, if you want to submit by hard copy, you can print the official PND 91 from the soft file enclosed in this email.

(xii) Trials for Elsevier e-books, Springer e-books, Emerald Emerging Market Case Studies and Elsevier Knovel
AIT Library will have new online resources and e-books in 2017. Elsevier e-books, Springer e-books and Emerald Emerging Market Case Studies will be activated in January 2017 whereas Elsevier Knovel will be officially started in April 2017. During the month of December 2016 (and December 2016 through March 2017 for Knovel), the publishers of these e-books and online resources have set up trials for AIT.

(xiii) Call for Applications on Erasmus+ KA1, scholarships Mobility for Learners with University of Granada, Spain
Please be informed that University of Granada, Spain, UGR still have available scholarships. PhD students are encouraged to apply under the Erasmus+ grant. The minimum stay is 3 months and must end by 30 July 2017.
There are 9 scholarships available for Thailand and selection will be first come first served.

The Newton Fund is now offering 2 grants below for researchers. The grants are an initiative that aims to develop long-term sustainable growth and welfare of partner countries by building research and innovation capacity. It forms part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.

(xv) Summer School in Human Sciences 2017 -University of Jyväskylä, Finland (JYU)
University of Jyväskylä is pleased to welcome AIT students to the 14th international Summer School in Human Sciences in May-June 2017. The Summer School comprises 21 interdisciplinary courses for students interested in e.g. cultural and communication studies, education, business & economics, sport and health sciences and social sciences. They also included one PhD-level course in their programme.
Students are accepted to the Summer School in the framework of the bilateral cooperation agreements between the University of Jyväskylä and AIT. Most of the courses have defined a maximum number of participants, JYU cannot accept more than five students in a course.

2) After filling in the online application form the applicants will receive an email with further instructions and with a request to register to Mobility-Online using a link which is included in the message.

4) Students will be notified of the admission to the Summer School by 15 March by e-mail.

(xvii) Invitation to participate for Summer School, Chulalongkorn University, March 19-24, 2017
Chulalongkorn Universty, Thailand & IWR, Heidelberg University, Germany are jointly organizing a summer school on applied mathematics and computational sciences to be held on March 19 to 24 at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. (xviii) UN-CECAR Postgraduate Course on Leadership for Sustainability, 13-22 March 2017, UNU, Tokyo, Japan
UNU-IAS and the University of Tokyo's, Sustainability Science Programmes, will organize a course on “Leadership for Sustainability” from 13 – 22 March 2017 at UNU, Tokyo, Japan.

(xix) Extended library hours during the mid-semester exams from 17 February - 2 March 2017
AIT Library will extend the Library hours to one o'clock in the morning during the mid-semester exams. The library hours from 17 February through 2 March 2017 will be as follows:
Monday - Sunday 8.00 a.m. - 1.00 a.m.
(xx) Allocation of staff and faculty to student house (AIT Sports Meet)
Due to very less number of participants, SU Sports announced a cancellation of the white house team (consisting of staff and faculty members) for AIT Sports Meet. The committee will randomly allocate the staff and faculty members who are interested to participate in AIT Sports Meet to student teams -- Red, Blue, Green and Yellow house. The updates name list of each house color will be announced soon.
The random allocation will be for faculty and staff members who are interested to take part in AIT Sports Meet only. Student participants will still belong to the same house.

(a) Paper Ranger: Revival of the Paper: 20 Feb. 2017
Department of Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE) at AIT's School of Engineering and Technology (SET) is organizing an event titled "Paper Ranger" at Room IE115, ISE Building on 20 February 2017 from 1330-1530 hours.

(c) Blood Donation: 9 Mar. 2017
The Thai Red Cross Society has been working with volunteer students and staff to collect units of blood from the AIT community. The bloodmobile visits AIT every three months, four times a year, hoping to collect enough units to supply the constant demand for blood.
The next visit for blood donation is scheduled on Thursday, 9 March 2017, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the parking lot in front of the AIT Conference Center.
Give blood! Experience a fulfilling sense of contribution! The donation process isn't time-consuming. It only takes about half an hour.
(d) AITAA Golf 2017: 17 Mar. 2017
AIT Alumni Association (Thailand), together with AITAA and Friends of AIT Foundation will organize a golf tournament for charity, “AITAA GOLF 2017” at Cascata Golf Club (Nakhon Nayok) on 17 March 2017, starting from 12 noon.
The event aims to raise funds to support AIT activities and research work as well as the activities of AITAA, AITAA (Thailand), and Friends of AIT Foundation.

(a) A Presentation and Dialogue on “Augmented Regional Innovation Systems in Asia - Paths Towards A Common Prosperity”: 6 Mar. 2017
Professor Haider A. Khan, currently the John Evans Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Economics at the Joseph Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, USA, will give a presentation and dialogue on “Augmented Regional Innovation Systems in Asia - Paths Towards A Common Prosperity” on 6 March 2017, from 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon at AIT Conference Center, Room 108.
Professor Haider Khan will provide an assessment of the effectiveness and potentialities of National Innovation Systems (NIS) in the Asia-Pacific for deeper economic integration. To this end, some preliminary policy suggestions have been formulated, based on formal models that he has developed.
These models are aimed at enhancing the region’s overall innovation strategy.

(iii) COURSES/TRAININGS
(a) Training on National Geo-Database and Geo-Portal for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development: 6 Feb. – 3 Mar. 2017
Geoinformatics Center (GIC), School of Engineering and Technology (SET), will organize a month-long training program on National Geo-Database and Geo-Portal for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development for participants from Pacific Island countries with the support of UNESCAP from 6 February – 3 March 2017. The opening session of the training will be participated by officials from UNESCAP and Japanese Embassy.
The 12 training participants are from the eight Pacific countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Micronesia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
C. Campus Updates
(i) AITIS Pavilion's Upgrade and Off Limits for a week (17-24 Feb, 2017)
Please be informed that the AITIS Pavilion has been closed from Friday, 17 February 2017 until Friday, 24 February 2017.
The AITIS Pavilion floor are being painted with a special coat that will provide better traction and protection for our students' benefit. The AITIS Pavilion must remain off limits for a week for the coating to set properly.
(ii) Survey: new faculty/staff accommodation complex
AIT is planning to build a new faculty/staff complex near at west end area using SCG/Heim Japanese Technology, as announced by the President as part of the plan of campus up-gradation.
The proposed complex will have 2 buildings with 2 floors, eight 2 bedroom units in each floor with a area of 47 sqm/unit and rental of THB 20,000/month + utilities. The buildings will be constructed using a modular system.
Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM) would like to hear AIT Community’s feedback on the proposed project and specially on their interest to rent the apartment through the below survey link.
The feedback will help OFAM to execute the proposed plan based on the interest of AIT community. Deadline of the feedback is 23 February 2017.
(iii) Update : Swimming pool is temporarily closed for repair
In December 2016, Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM)
found that there were reports of few incidents that occurred in the swimming pool. During the year end break, OFAM scheduled the big cleaning by draining out the water as well as do minor repairs in the affected areas.
However after draining out the water from both the swimming pools, OFAM found out damages that need to be immediately repaired for the safety of the community members using swimming pool. In January 2017, OFAM coordinated and finalized the contractor to repair/replace broken tiles, broken light frames, floor inlets, vacuum tubes and grout the tiles including other minor repairs.
Please be informed that OFAM has already started the repair, which will take few weeks to complete, thus it will be open to the community by end of February 2017
(iv) Temporary Relocation of Photo Vending Machine from Administration to Cafeteria
Please be informed that due to the renovation of the ground floor of the Administration Building, the photo vending machine has been moved temporarily to Cafeteria (entrance opposite Korea House).
(v) Vacant Food stalls available at The AIT Cafeteria
3 Food Stalls at the AIT Cafeteria are now available for food providers.
