In this issue:
i) Safety and Precautionary Measures Regarding Corovavirus (2019 nCov)
E-mail sent from Vice President for Administration on 27 January 2020.
Dear AIT Community,
The epidemic of the coronavirus (2019-nCoV), which originated from Wuhan, China has caused ramifications leading to virus infections and deaths. The incubation period of the coronavirus is estimated between 2 to 14 days before the symptoms appear, and without symptoms, a person may not know they have the infection, but still be able to spread it. The infection is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets or contact with infected secretions from individuals. Currently, there have been reports of infected individuals travelling to Thailand.
The Institute is concerned and remains cautious about the situation. Therefore, in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus, the Institute request that the AIT Community follow these requirements below:
1. For students, employees, and residents who have travelled to Wuhan, China in the past two weeks, you are required to stay at home/dormitories for 14 days after the date of return to Thailand. All must submit detailed information, including name, phone number, and dorm or housing unit number to the appropriate authorities. Do not attend classes or come to the office during this time. For students and their families, please inform the Student Welfare Unit at telephone number 02-524-6744 (student-welfare@ait.ac.th). For employees and their families, the employee must inform the Office of Human Resources Services (hro@ait.ac.th) at telephone number 02-524-5018. We will be in contact with you immediately upon your notification of AIT.
2. For students, employees, and residents who have travelled to the rest of China in the past two weeks, you can perform normal duties but are requested to report to the Medical Center every day, for 14 days after the date of return to Thailand. All are requested to submit detailed information, including name, phone number, and dorm or housing unit number to the respective Student Welfare Unit or the Office of Human Resources Services; as indicated in the contact details contained in Point 1 above.
3. For students/employees/residents who have stayed in Thailand throughout these past weeks, please refrain from having direct contact with those who have recently travelled back from China to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. If you are aware of your friends/colleagues who come back from China, please inform the Student Welfare Unit or the Office of Human Resources Services.
4. Students/employees/residents who have cold-like symptoms such as runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever, difficulty breathing or a general feeling of being unwell, please seek immediate medical care at the AIT Medical Center and/or hospitals.
5. Students and employees who have plans to travel to China should refrain from doing so. If it is not possible to postpone the trip, it is recommended to avoid gathering in enclosed or crowded spaces, wear a mask and avoid close contact with people who are sick with runny nose and coughing, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol gel.
AIT will closely monitor the situation and requests the kind cooperation from our AIT community to be vigilant in order to prevent the spread of the corona-viruses on our small campus. It is recommended to take practical precautions, such as wearing a mask and washing hands frequently.
More information and updates on the outbreak situation can be found from the website of the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health at http://ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/intro.php

(c)EL course schedule for the January 2020 Semester
Email from AIT Language Center (7 Jan. 2020)
The registration for Academic English (EL) classes for the January 2020 Semester is now open. Please click here and choose from the available time slots (AIT login is required) before the deadline on Friday 17 January 2020 (Adding/Dropping). Classes start on 22 January 2020.
Students with English scores below AIT’s admission requirements will be automatically enrolled in the mandatory English Language (EL) courses listed below. Students will need to pay a registration fee at the AIT Cashier for EL courses. The EL course level will be automatically assigned based on a student’s current English score:
5.0 - EL15 Intermediate English Composition
5.5 - EL19 Academic and Technical Writing
English course fee: 3,000 Baht one-time flat fee to all newly enrolled students. This is extra from the 2,000 Baht one-time flat fee for Language Support that all new students are required to pay.
The EL courses should be your first priority, therefore scheduling problems and conflicts are not valid reasons to request to unregister from the EL courses. To unregister from the course during a given semester, you will need to submit a memo requesting the EL exemption on a semester basis stating clearly that you intend to join in the following semester. Should you wish to drop the course completely and submit a standardized test score (IELTS or TOEFL), you can do so by submitting a memo stating clearly that you will submit a satisfactory writing score (6 or higher) from a standardized test before thesis credit enrollment. Please note that once you declare this, you will not be allowed to take the AIT English test to fulfil your English requirements.
For January 2020 Semester, memos will need to be approved by your advisor and submitted to and approved by the Language Center before 17 January 2020 (AIT adding/dropping date). If you fail to drop the EL course you are enrolled in before 7 February, you will still be invoiced and graded for the EL course you have enrolled.
As you have been informed during the orientation, AIT maintains a strict policy on English language requirements. Students who have not met the English language requirements by the third semester of study will not be allowed to register for thesis or research credits.
