Email from AIT Admission on 18 July 2020
Dear AIT Incoming Students:
AIT will be open for Fall Semester 2020 on 4 August 2020. On behalf of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), we would like to extend our warm greetings and welcome you to the AIT family!
For those of you who are already in Thailand, we look forward to seeing you at the Fall Semester Orientation on 3 August 2020. For those currently outside Thailand, we are working very hard in close cooperation with the Government of Thailand to get you to the AIT campus as quickly as feasible. We are still finalizing many details, and additional information will be shared in the coming days as they are available.
Meanwhile, we would like to share with you the below updates that should help and guide you as you prepare for the Fall Semester. Please note this information is for the AIT-Thailand campus students
For New Students who are already in Thailand
Registration and Payments
Please find below the guidelines for the registration process for the Fall 2020 semester:
1) You are requested to come to the Admissions Unit to personally register starting from 21 July 2020. Please bring along the required original documents including your medical certificate to show to the Admissions Unit of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).
2) If payment for the August 2020 semester's fees has been done through a bank transfer, please submit the bank transaction details to the Cashier and obtain an AIT official receipt. The Fall 2020 semester fees include Tuition Fee, Registration Fee, Language Support Fee, Medical Insurance, Student Union (SU) Fee, and Student ID Card. (Please refer to your Financial Assurance Form.) After completion of the payment, please submit the receipts to the Scholarships Unit of OSA.
3) The Scholarships Unit will endorse your documents to the Registry to process your ID Card and you can then obtain your username/password to access the SIS (Student Information System).
4) Please note that all your required documents including payments can also be sent in advance by email to aso@ait.ac.th.
For New Students who are now Overseas
We understand that our international students are experiencing many challenges in this year of Covid-19 due to visa status, location, travel restrictions, and coronavirus situations. Sadly, we recognize that because of ongoing restrictions and visa processing delays, many international students may not be able to arrive in Thailand before the start of the Fall semester classes on 4 August 2020. Even so, your education at AIT will continue without missing a beat. This is because we are providing Hybrid Instruction this Fall at AIT, where your online experience will be as close to residential experience as possible. But please read carefully below the steps necessary before you can arrive in Bangkok from your home country (or a third country).
Visa and Entry to Thailand
The information regarding the documents you need to secure before traveling to Thailand are available in the attached Checklist and at the following weblink: What’s-Next-Guidelines.
AIT provided documents: AIT will provide you with the following documents, such as the Visa Authorization Letter, Certificate of Admission, Offer Letter, AIT Education License, and a certification issued by Generali Medical Insurance of your medical insurance coverage during your AIT studies in Thailand. In addition, you will also receive the supporting documents of the Coordinator of Admissions and Scholarship office, such as a copy of AIT’s Authorized Person’s Passport, his/her Work Permit and AIT ID Card.
Documents to take to Embassy: After receiving these documents from AIT, please refer to the Checklist for the full set of documents you need to bring to the Thai Embassy / Consulate in your home country (or third country) to initiate your applications for a Non-immigrant Visa for Educational Purposes (“ED Visa”), as well as for a Certificate of Entry (CoE) to Thailand.
Health insurance: Among the CoE application requirements, in addition to your Generali coverage, you must purchase a medical insurance with a minimum coverage of USD 100,000 for medical costs incurred in Thailand at least for six months, including treatment costs for Covid-19. This additional requirement is particularly for this Covid-19 time.
Travel and Quarantine
Travel: The Royal Thai Embassy / Consulate will work with you to reserve a seat on a flight to Thailand, which could be a commercial flight or a charter flight. The Embassy will accordingly inform you of the flight schedules and costs, and when you will be approved to get on a flight to Thailand. This information is needed as part of your application for a CoE. After the flight is confirmed, please communicate your flight details to admissions@ait.ac.th immediately.
Quarantine: At present, the Thai Government has in place a 14-day mandatory quarantine requirement for all nationals entering Thailand. Discussions are currently ongoing between AIT and the Thai Government to allow AIT to be approved as an Organizational Quarantine (OQ) facility for AIT students from overseas, and we will know the status in a week or so. However, alternatively, you can consider booking now with any of the Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) venues in Thailand suggested by the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General, for which you will need to bear the costs associated with this.
Registration and Payments
Please find below the guidelines for the registration process for the Fall 2020 semester:
1) For new students who are in their home countries and are unable to arrive at AIT before August 2020, a staff from your Academic Program at AIT will collect your user ID and password from the Admissions and Scholarships Unit (ASU).
2) The Academic Program staff will facilitate and guide you in registering for your Fall courses online (SIS), as well as in your attendance in the online Hybrid Classes. All courses for the Fall semester will be offered under a Hybrid Instruction modality until all registered students can attend in-person. See Classes and Academic Activities below for details.
3) Students who have already made payments for the Fall 2020 semester fees, are requested to send the scanned copy of the transaction details or bank transfer receipt to aso@ait.ac.th. You will be issued a receipt of acknowledgment through email. Because of Covid-19, there may be difficulty in transferring the funds on time due to restrictions at your home country or current location. If so, please contact the Admissions and Scholarships Coordinator, Dr. Tenzin Rabgyal (tenzin@ait.ac.th).
Fall Semester Overseas Students Forum
This year, we appreciate that coming from overseas to Thailand is especially challenging and complex, because of Covid-19. Therefore, we will have an online session where many of your questions on documents, travel, quarantine, and classes can be answered. Therefore, a special online Fall Semester Overseas Students Forum is planned by AIT for Wednesday, 29 July 2020, to offer overseas students the opportunity to hear from members of the AIT Leadership. You can, if you wish, submit your questions in advance . Further details on this will be communicated to you in a separate email a few days before the event.
Classes and Academic Activities
The approach to classroom teaching this Fall is the Hybrid Instruction: There will be in-person students in the classrooms with online students accessing into the same class remotely. These online students would be those overseas students who have not yet arrived in Thailand or who will still be in quarantine in Thailand. They will be part of the class interacting with the instructor and the students in residence via our Hybrid Instruction technology.
Classes for the Fall semester will begin on Tuesday, 4 August 2020. We are aware that a number of you will most likely not be able to travel to Thailand in time during Covid-19 time. Therefore, we have developed AIT’s new Hybrid Instruction System which will allow students in Thailand to attend classes in-person, and those not yet on campus in Thailand to attend the same class online. Further details on AIT’s new Hybrid instruction, including access and operations, will be communicated to you in a separate email next week. This Hybrid Instruction technology will also allow online participation in student activities which we will be planning. We aim to provide those online from outside Thailand as close to a residential experience at AIT as possible, until he/she is able to arrive on our campus.
New Students Orientation
The Fall Semester Orientation program for new students is scheduled on 3 August 2020 at the Robert B. Banks Auditorium in the AIT Conference Center. The Orientation program will also be conducted online via live streaming for students who are unable to join in person. Detailed instructions and other information on the New Students Orientation will be provided over the coming weeks
Modifications in Behavior and to Residential and Student Life
Whenever you arrive on campus, you can expect that there will be strict measures to protect the health of everyone on campus. Whether you are new to the AIT family or are returning to campus for another semester, it will be important for all members of our campus community to be aware of and follow critical, public health-driven behavioral expectations — including the wearing of face masks, social distancing, daily health assessments, hygiene/cleaning, and social gatherings. More details on these measures will be shared with you once you are on campus, whenever that may be.
Thailand has so far done exceedingly well in controlling the coronavirus, with no local cases in almost two months. AIT has been free from any Covid-19 case so far, and we will continue to ensure that the campus is safe. As members of the AIT family we can adopt a culture of shared responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of our community. It will be a different semester, but if we all stay diligent, we will experience it together and make it a great Fall Semester!
Any questions on this letter can be directed to tenzin@ait.ac.th or call on mobile: +66819033055 (whatsapp or viber or wechat or kakao, or Telegram)
In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy!
See you all soon!
