WEEK# 45, 16 – 22 November 2020
In this issue:
1) Update from the AIT COVID-19 Task Force
Email from the Director, Office of Academic Administration on 16 November 2020.
Dear AIT Family:
We are now heading towards the end of the Fall 2020 semester with less than a week to go before classes end.
Since September 2020 until today, 121 overseas students have booked our AIT OQ, 89 have checked in, and 84 have completed OQ. Five are still completing their stay in OQ. We continue to welcome into our OQ more of our Fall 2020 Semester intake, along with our new intake of students for the Spring 2021 Semester. For your information, there has not been an OQ occupant testing positive for over four weeks now, but we continue to be very vigilant with our management of the OQ.
The AIT COVID-19 Task Force wishes to provide the AIT community with some modifications/emphasis of its general measures, which are Intranet-published at the AIT COVID-19 webpage. The modifications are based on assessment of current situations and are always subject to change.
1. Phase 1 - AIT OQ
It has been decided that AIT Employees at Level VII or lower can also stay in the AIT OQ beginning 1 December 2020. However, dependents are not allowed to stay in the AIT OQ.
2. Phase 2 - 7-day Self-Isolation (SI) after completing quarantine
We wish to emphasise that AIT employees (and their dependents, if any) who complete the 14-day quarantine either at ASQ or AIT OQ must do 7-day self-isolation in the designated SI dorm at AIT or off-campus.
3. Phase 3 - After Self-Isolation (SI)
For those who check-in starting on 18 November 2020, Phase 3 (after SI) is reduced from 5 weeks to 3 weeks. During this Phase 3, students and employees, including their dependents, are required to remain in a single non-air conditioned single-toilet room on campus.
Soon after Phase 3, continuing students who have kept their accommodation units on campus are required to immediately return to their old rooms. Other students will accordingly be required to move out of their assigned SI rooms to other available units on campus.
If you have any questions on the three Phases, please contact the Task Force (℅ izel@ait.ac.th) for clarification.
4. OQ rooms allotted for Thammasat University international students
With the current number of AIT students reducing, and with operation stabilising, AIT has decided to allot 20 rooms (Building C) for the overseas students of our neighbour, Thammasat University (TU), from 22 November until 31 December 2020, when this arrangement will be reviewed.
5. International Travel
We emphasise again that international travel, both outbound and inbound, for AIT members should be mission-essential or for humanitarian reasons only. For AIT students, employees, and their dependents, before planning any international travel, TF approval is required.
6. Gatherings
Physical meetings / gatherings for up to 250 persons are allowed. However, measures including temperature checks at the entrance and recording of contact details of all participants, are required. In addition, when serving food, an organizer should consider set meals instead of a buffet. In case a buffet is organized, self-service is not allowed, and food servers must be well protected with masks and gloves.
We continue to assure the AIT community of the vigilance in operating the OQ facility, rigorously focusing on the safety for the whole community. We also would like to urge all members of the AIT community to take all guidelines seriously. Thank you very much for your continued cooperation and sacrifices to keep our community safe.

Background
The usual agricultural practices will not be able to feed the World, as demand for agricultural products increases while agricultural land remains limited. In many ways today’s agricultural practices are inefficient, with irrigation wasting an estimated 80-90% of the water used and about 40% of farms globally overuse fertilizers and chemicals, leading to harmful effects on soil and water quality, and consequently yield per unit area. Digital Technologies (DTs) can tackle many food production and distribution challenges, such as low productivity, high transaction costs, limited use of inputs and minimal commercialization. Keeping in mind that the Fourth Industrial Revolution (i.e., emergence of ICT or DTs) is behind the disruption in all sectors and industries, agriculture, one of the oldest industries in human history, is also evolving more rapidly than ever. Smart farming technology is a technological solution that aims to create highly added value by integrating existing agricultural technologies with cutting-edge ICT solutions including Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Drone Technology. AIT Extension Program on Digital Disruption in Agriculture and Food Industry will be a set of independent as well as interconnected training courses (online, face2face, blended), which have been designed to equip you with better understanding, required knowledge and skills on Digital Disruption in Agriculture & Food Industry.
