4) [Residents] Internet Performance and WiFi 6 Upgrade

Dear Residents

We would like to announce that the upgrade of Internet access has been completed in all our AIT accommodation units. With this upgrade, each room is now equipped with the latest wifi technology called wifi 6. However, we wanted to also let you know that through our testing, users will not be able to make use of this high performance facility if the device you use does not support wifi 6.

To check what wifi standard your device supports, please do the following:

1. On Windows, open your settings menu, go to “network & internet”, click “WiFi” in the side menu, then select “Hardware properties”. Bellow the name of your network, you will see the protocol spelled out as “WiFi version (802.11x)”, where “version” will be the version and “x” will correspond to the following wifi standard list:802.11b ( wifi 1 )
802.11a ( wifi 2 )
802.11g ( wifi 3 )
802.11n ( wifi 4 )
802.11ac ( wifi 5 )
802.11ax ( wifi 6 )

2. If you’re on a Mac, hold the Option key while clicking on the WiFi icon in your status bar. You will see a bunch of extra information about your network, look near the bottom of the menu, you will see PHY Mode: 802.11(x). The x will indicate your standard in above list

To test the performance of the Internet connection, please do the following:

For a desktop and laptop you can use LAN port or wifi to test the performance. Please bear in mind that the LAN port test will always show the best result. You will get the best performance if your LAN port speed is 1Gbps or your device's wifi is wifi 6. Lower LAN speed or Wifi standard, will result in lower Internet performance.

To test the Internet performance using computers (PC/Mac), go to speedtest.net and choose the server to be 3BB/Bangkok. If 1 Gbps LAN port is used, the result for the student accommodation should be between 500-600Mbps, and for employee accommodation between 900-930Mbps. If you use a mobile device to test the performance, download the speedtest APP and choose the same server as above. Please note that the result of the test using wifi will be lower than that using LAN.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing about your improved wifi performance.
