(iv) Monthly Electronic Pay Slip

Email from Finance Office (19 Oct. 2018)

With the new policy to reduce cheque payments to Faculty and Staffs, all refunds and settlements [i.e. Cash Purchase Summary (CPS), Request for Reimbursement of Travel Expenses (RRTE), and Promissory Note (PN) Settlements] have been settled through Payroll.

Starting from October 2018, we had requested ITServ to provide more option for you to view your salary and all settlement transactions by auto sending secured electronic pay slip directly to your email account in pdf format. This pdf file will require a password to open (birthday with the format dd/mm/yyyy). You still can view the settlement transactions from online pay slip at https://intranet.ait.ac.th / by logging in to HRIS as usual.

If you do not want to have this secured electronic pay slip sent to your email account, you can unsubscribe by accessing https://intranet.ait.ac.th/ , log-in to HRIS, click View Pay Slips and then untick the check box which indicates that you do not want to receive monthly pay slip and save.

(c)A Special Talk on: Alkali-containing molecular-ion SIMS: an inventive chemical approach for quantitative composition analysis of low-dimensional structures

A special talk on “Alkali-containing molecular-ion SIMS: an inventive chemical approach for quantitative composition analysis of low-dimensional structures” by Prof. Purushottam Chakraborty, Former Senior Professor, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, India & Adjunct Professor of Physics, University of Pretoria, South Africa will be held on:

Date: Wednesday, 7 November 2018

Time: 15.00-16.00 Venue: ISE 106, Chalerm Prakiat Building

Abstract: If alkali metals such as Cs, Li, Rb, K, Na, etc. (referred as A in general) are present in the neighborhood of the probing element (M) on a sample surface, quasimolecular ions can be formed by the attachment of these alkali ions [(MA)+] in the secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) process. Formation of these MA+ molecular ions has a strong correlation to the atomic polarizability of the element M. The emission process for the re-sputtered species M0 is decoupled from the MA+ ion formation process, in analogy with the ion formation in secondary neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS), resulting in a drastic decrease in the conventional ‘matrix effect’ in SIMS.

Although the detection of MA+ molecular ions in SIMS has found its applicability in direct materials quantification, it generally suffers from a low useful yield. In such cases, detection of [(MA)n + (n=2, 3,….)] molecular ions offers a much better sensitivity (even by several orders of magnitude), as the yields of such molecular ion-complexes have often been found to be higher than that of MA+ ions. The recombination coefficient of MA+ or MA2 + molecular species depends on the electro-positivity or electronegativity of the element M, respectively. Apart from the surface binding energy of the respective uppermost monolayer, the changes in local surface work-function have often been found to play a significant role in the emission of these molecular ions. Although these MAn + molecular-ion based SIMS has great relevance in the analysis of materials, a complete understanding on the formation mechanisms of these ion-complexes is still lacking.

A procedure, based on MAn +-SIMS approach, has been proposed for the accurate germanium quantification in Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE)-grown Si1−xGex alloys. The ‘matrix effect’ has been shown to be completely suppressed for all Ge concentrations irrespective of impact Cs+ ion energies. Cesium, the fifth alkali element, is the most reactive of all the metals. The methodology has successfully been applied for direct quantitative composition analysis of various thin film and multilayer structures. Recent study on various ZnO-based nanostructures has successfully been correlated to their photo-catalysis and photoemission responses. The talk will address the various possible formation mechanisms of MCsn + molecular ion-complexes in sputtering process and the fascinating applications of the MCsn +-SIMS approach for the interfacial analysis of ultrathin films, superlattices, quantum wells, etc. and for compositional analysis of MBE - grown Si1-xGex alloy structures.

(ii) LECTURES / SEMINARS / CONFERENCES

(a) SEMINAR on 6 November : Uncertainty in migration forecasting – data, methods and challenges

You are cordially invited to attend a special lecture by Dr Arkadiusz Wiśniowski  of the University of Manchester, UK.

Title: Uncertainty in migration forecasting – data, methods and challenges

Date: Tuesday, 6th November 2018
Time: 15:00 – 16:00 hrs
Venue:S101 SERD Deans office meeting room

Dr Wiśniowski is a Lecturer in Social Statistics Department at the University of Manchester. Previously, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Population Change and Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute, University of Southampton. He was also a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University, Researcher at the Central European Forum for Migration and Population Research in Warsaw, and Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of Applied Econometrics, Warsaw School of Economics. His work focuses on the development and application of statistical methods to sustainable development challenges in developed and developing countries.

Abstract: International migration flows are considered the most difficult demographic component to forecast and, for that reason, models for forecasting migration are few and relatively undeveloped. This is worrying because international migration is often the most influential component of population growth and in debates about societal and economic change. The need for better migration forecasts can be addressed, firstly, by combining data from various sources such as official statistics from various countries, surveys and social media data. Secondly, Bayesian inferential framework allows providing estimates of model parameters and forecasts with measures of uncertainty. In this presentation, a selection of Bayesian hierarchical models for combining data from various sources and quantifying uncertainty in migration forecasts will be described.
All are invited to attend this Seminar.
