AIT Fund Raising Campaign for Nepal Disaster

Message from AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai

On Monday, 27 April, I called a meeting with about 40 Nepalese faculty and staff working at AIT, along with members of the management, to discuss how the AIT Community can provide help to relieve the great difficulties after the Nepal Earthquake.

The meeting supported my proposal to send a 3-man inspection team to Nepal to see first-hand the situation and find out how AIT can assist based on the Institute’s strength and resources.  This is in addition to the team in DPMM (Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management) which will be flying to Nepal with our partner, Telecoms Sans Frontieres (TSF), to assist in the humanitarian response in Nepal through telecommunications.

The AIT Nepalese community have collected money, food, clothes etc and held a candle light vigil on Sunday, 26 April, which was attended by a large and diverse group of AITians.

AIT will now start a campaign at the Institute level, to collect donations among its community, alumni, partners and friends, and an AIT account has now been set up, with the below details.

Account Name:     AIT Fund Raising Campaign for Nepal Disaster

Account Number:  178-2-54143-7

Bank Address:       KASIKORNBANK

Klong Luang Branch

                              58/1 Moo 9, Paholyothin Road

                              Klong Nueng, Klong Luang

For immediate needs, our Remote Sensing & GIS program is preparing a geo-portal to launch a website to display satellite maps of the damaged areas and conduct some analyses.  Likewise, our Environmental Engineering Program is looking at water purification technologies which could be applicable in disaster situations, while intERLab (Internet Education & Research Laboratory) proposed deploying mobile wireless network on an ad hoc basis for emergency conditions, such as after a natural disaster when a fixed network infrastructure is not available or have been destroyed.

For the medium term, AIT’s Habitech Center is expected to assist with the cooperative housing project, similar to the ones in the South of Thailand after the Tsunami, and in Aceh after its earthquake and in the Philippines after the typhoon.

There are several initiatives AIT is already working on and Mr. Karma Rana, Institute Secretary, (karma@ait.ac.th ; ext 6002), will serve as the focal person, in coordinating the Institute’s efforts.

Before the end of the meeting, a moment of silence was observed as a show of respect and empathy for all victims of this giant earthquake.

I would like to invite you to please actively take part in this drive and show our support and solidarity for Nepal during this most difficult and challenging period for the country.

Thank you.

On behalf of our Institute, I wish to express our sincere appreciation of the excellent services Dr Donya has rendered in her capacity as Dean of the School of Management over the past two years, and as faculty for almost 13 years.  I have indeed great pleasure in having worked with her as a Dean and faculty colleague.  I am confident that we will continue to benefit from her good services as a faculty and colleague in the future.  We wish her continued success.

In this regard, I am also pleased to announce that Professor M Nazrul Islam has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the School of Management from 1 May 2015 until we are able to find a replacement.  This appointment is concurrent to his current positions as Visiting Professor and Academic Coordinator in the School of Management.  We wish Professor Islam every success on this additional assignment and wish him well in carrying this additional administrative task.

An article authored by GDS alumnus and faculty is one among the most downloaded articles published in Routledge Social Sciences journals in 2014

An article "Contesting and complying: gender and ethnicity among Thai-Sikh diaspora youth in Bangkok", authored by Ms. Tresa Virankabutra, an AIT alumnus from Gender and Development Studies, School of Environment, Resources, and Dr. Kyoko  Kusakabe, was published in Migration and Development and has been included in an online article collection featuring the most downloaded articles published in Routledge Social Sciences journals in 2014. The collection features the top three most downloaded articles that were published and downloaded in 2014 in each Routledge Social Sciences journal.

The article is freely available on the website until the 30 June 2015, via the collection homepage here: http://bit.ly/social-sciences-most-read

To find the article, please click on Development Studies in the above link.

The paper focuses specifically on Third and Fourth generation Thai Sikh youth and how they struggle to find a balance between the ethnic boundaries of their Diaspora community and the multicultural context of the larger society of Thailand, the host country. Negotiating a healthy balance without surrendering group identity leads to contesting and complying while highlighting the differences between young women and men as they maneuver their cultural spaces in different ways.
