1) Upgrade of Campus Internet Network and WiFi Using FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) Technology
Email from the Vice-President for Administration on 20 December 2021
Dear AIT Community,
Good news! The Contract for the upgrade of the AIT Campus Internet Network and WiFi has been signed by the President last week. Following many months of in-depth assessment and given the specialized nature of the WiFi upgrade and installation requirements, AIT was fortunate to have several vendors showing interest in this project. After rigorous scrutiny of the various options by the campus internet network and connectivity working group, we are glad to announce that the project has now officially been awarded to AIS, who has the required expertise and experience in handling similar projects for dormitories at Thammasat University and many other similar projects. AIS has met our financial considerations also, and AIT looks forward to an extended cooperation with AIS.
Work begins in January 2022. There will be rolling “beneficiaries” with some parts of the campus benefitting first. But the long-awaited internet connection upgrade will be delivered completely within 6 months starting from January 2022, with all accommodation units moving to Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) technology, which is similar to commercial broadband services, like True / AIS / BBconnect provided to private residents across Thailand. In FTTH technology, current LAN copper cable technology in accommodation units will be replaced with Fiber that has the capability to transport data at faster speeds, is less susceptible to glitches than with traditional LAN cables, and can withstand extreme weather conditions. Each accommodation unit will have its own unique WiFi device installed and dedicated to the tenant, with outsourced service support to ensure uninterrupted Internet access. In addition to this, current WiFi access points in accommodation units will be re-allocated across the rest of the campus to continue to enhance the WiFi signal in both academic settings and social surroundings.
Since the installation work of the Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) technology will be in phases, early priority is given to student dormitories, to then be followed by employee accommodation units. Although this means that some Units will be online before others, with the worldwide logistical shipping delays that abound and AIS needing to procure over 1,700 WiFi routers from overseas in one batch, understandably it is difficult at this current time to obtain a firm and guaranteed commitment as to which dorms will go Live when. We will however, keep you posted throughout the first few months of 2022, with regards to specific details on the installation schedule in specific areas. Our initial aim is to begin with Dorms T, U, V, W, X, and Y….
During the process of installation, we thank you sincerely for your support and understanding, due to some minor glitches that may occur in the internet connectivity and other disturbances that may be caused, as the installation requires the technician to enter every dorm/unit to install the fiber optic cable and WiFi router.
We are delighted to bring this much-needed upgrade to our campus and look forward to its full implementation at AIT. Again, thank you for your very kind patience over the past year, as we have now ascertained the right system that offers the right solution at the right price to our entire AIT campus.
Enjoy the end-of-year break and we wish you a wonderful 2022 – Happy New Gregorian Year!
