3) COVID-19 TF Update

Email from the Director, Office of Academic Administration on 6 August 2021

Dear AIT Family,

Another Student Positive Case on Campus – We would like to report a new case of one of our May 2021 graduates, who stayed in J46 on campus and tested positive for COVID-19 during her pre-flight processing on August 4.  She is now in our community OQ, registered under the Home Isolation scheme with Thammasat University Hospital.

We want to emphasize that the feelings toward AIT community members who tested positive should be one of sympathy and not resentment.  We have received reports of positive-case students who received unfriendly social media, and this is not appropriate behavior.  We should wish all of them a speedy recovery.

Based on contact tracing of this student, the identified contacts have now been required to undergo Self-Isolation (SI) in their own rooms if living alone; while those who stayed in shared units are moved to the newly designated community SI dorm.  Rapid tests for COVID-19 were performed for these contacts.

Please find below the timeline of our student, and if any member of the AIT community has been to the places listed, please be careful and closely self-monitor yourselves for seven days for any symptoms.  OFAM will perform thorough cleaning of these areas in the next two days and will discuss with those responsible for those areas so that they can take the necessary follow-up precautionary measures.

Additional protective social distance measures between service staff and customers - The Task Force is putting in additional protective social distance/separation measures between service staff and customers, such as installation of shields/barriers in more units, and guidelines for units on handling documents and dealing with customers etc.  Details will be shared in future announcements, and we seek your understanding if this causes any inconvenience in services.

Finally, we stress once again the need to take personal responsibility at this time of severe pandemic.  We still receive reports of larger-than-allowed private gatherings and non-use of masks.  Please pay attention to these, and the whole community thank you.  Please check with the Task Force if you have any queries and also visit the Intranet page where all COVID-19 related information and updates from the Task Force are available.

Thank you for your cooperation.

4) Condolences - Passing Away of AIT Student

Email from AIT President on 5 August 2021.

Dear AIT Family,

I am deeply saddened to inform you about the passing away of Mr. Naga Venkata Rama Sai Sri Harsha Bonala, our student from India, on 2 August 2021 at Thammasat University Hospital (TUH). Mr. Sri Harsha had a cardiac arrest in his dorm and was rushed to the hospital. Previously, he had been admitted to TUH from 4 to 15 June 2021 with diagnosis of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and was not COVID-related.  Mr. Sri Harsha was released by TUH and moved back to AIT in the middle of June.

Various members of the AIT community, including faculty and the Office of Student Affairs, dealt with the emergency and the aftermath—including notifying the family.  With the support of the Embassy of India and the Thai authorities, Mr. Sri Harsha’s mortal remains was transported back to his home country of India.

We at AIT are extremely sad, as this young, energetic, and vibrant man was well-liked by his classmates and his teachers, and his passing away at AIT at an early age will be remembered by all of us here.  Our thoughts are with Mr. Sri Harsha's parents, family members and friends during this most difficult time, and AIT conveys our deepest condolences.

Dr. Eden Y Woon

President
