A. Announcements

 
(i) Condolence: Prof S M Qureshi


AIT Hall of Fame Inductee Prof S M Qureshi passed away on 17 February 2019. The founder Vice-Chancellor of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, Pakistan, he also served as a federal secretary in the Government of Pakistan and as an honorary advisor to the Governor of Sindh, Pakistan.

After completing his Bachelor's in Engineering from the University of Karachi, Dr. Qureshi came to AIT to pursue his Master's in Structural Engineering and Construction (1965). He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield, UK.

He played an important role in promoting cooperation between AIT and Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. An active participant in AIT affairs, he was among the 11 alumni who were inducted in the AIT Hall of Fame in September 2010. Prof. Qureshi also attended the inauguration of the modernized AIT Library in April last year, where he was among the alumni who greeted HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

According to family sources, prayers was offered at Jamia Masjid (Askar-IV) in Karachi on 19 February. The AIT family joins everyone in offering condolences at the passing away of its illustrious alumnus.

 

 

(ii) AIT Alumna Appointed Deputy Minister in the Maldives

AIT alumna Fathimath Yumna (Master's in Gender and Development Studies, 2004) has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Republic of Maldives: She has previously served at the post of a consultant in the SAARC/UNWOMEN and also as a Director General at the Department of Gender and Family Protection Services at the Ministry of Health and Family.

(iii) Library hours during the mid-semester examination periods (15 - 28 February 2019)

Dear all,

According to the student’s request for longer opening hours in the Library for their learning process and examination, a trial of extended opening hours has been planned to collect the information about the late-night user of the Library during this mid-semester examination period.

The details of the opening hours and the library services are as follows.

- From 15 - 28 February 2019 (2 weeks), the Library will be open 24 hours.

- During 8.00 a.m. -12.00 a.m., the Library provides library facilities and services.

- During 12.00 a.m. - 8.00 a.m., the Library provides only the 24 hours study area on the 1st floor. The area covers from the front of the Library to the end of e-book Zone. One Library staff will monitor for security. (No library services)

(iv) Updates on the plastic bottle wastes initiative

Email from AIT Solutions (31 Jan. 2019)

Dear AIT Community,

An initiative was launched to help AIT become plastic bottle waste free by collecting all empty bottles and giving people reward point for every bottle they return. 

The purpose of this initiative is not to encourage people to buy and drink more plastic bottles but to get rid of all the plastic bottle wastes we have in the campus and to have a channel where people can properly segregate their plastic bottle wastes and turn into reward points.

The main goal is to use the plastic bottle wastes for research and experimentation purposes.

Updates on the rewards/ prizes:

You need to get the stamp card at AIT Solutions office or at Chill Chill shop to start earning points every time you give your empty bottles to Innovation Lab at AIT Solutions

Why is Innovation Lab collecting plastic bottles?
These plastic bottles will be used for research and experimentation to make an innovative construction materials

What is the duration of this project?

We will accept plastic bottles until 30 April 2019 and will resume in the next semester.

(iii)TRAININGS

(a) Thai Courses: Jan – Mar. 2019

The Language Center is pleased to announce the opening of Thai Courses for Beginners.

Survival Thai

The 7-week survival Thai course is an introduction to Thai languages which will cover basic words, phrases, daily and simple expressions and basic grammatical structures to communicate with Thais. The purpose of the course is to introduce participants to the principles and basic of Thai language as used in everyday conversation. Moreover, the course will prepare them to feel confident to communicate with Thais and feel at ease while staying in Thailand.

- 29 January  –  13 March 2019
- Monday and Wednesday, twice a week
- From 17:00 – 18:30
- Total 20 hours
- Course fee: 2,000 baht

Thai Reading and Writing

This course is the introduction to reading and writing. It is the 7-week course that is designed for those who do not know how to read and write Thai language. The participants will practice reading letters and learn how to spell words and make up words.

- 5 February  – 21 March 2019
- Tuesday and Thursday, twice a week
- From 17:00 – 18:30
- Total 20 hours
-  Course fee: 2,000 baht

(b) Professional Training Program on Advanced Shrimp Farming: 3 – 10 Mar. 2019

A professional training program on advanced shrimp farming will be organized by AIT Extension from 03-10 March 2019 at AIT.

“Advanced Shrimp Farming” is a one-week long professional training program, which has been designed to address not only the lack of know-how and issues with farming practices but also to meet the specific needs and requirements for the development of this venture in the region. The program will cover the state of the art of farming practices, existing good practices, innovation and advanced technologies in farming and shrimp healthcare along with planning and management of environmental issues with shrimp farming.

C. Campus Updates

 

(i) Parking area and pick-up points for Lazada, Kerry, etc delivery truck / pick-up

Email from OFAM (18 Feb. 2019)

This is to announce to everyone especially those who are usually shopping online that starting today, 18 February 2019, all delivery service trucks / pick-ups like Kerry, Lazada, Chillindo, etc. will park and deliver goods to AIT customers at the old Lawson 108 /Cafeteria parking area like before and beside 7-Eleven only.  This is for the purpose of keeping traffic and security in order around the campus.

However, for motorcycle delivery as they are not allowed to go beyond Interlab area, delivery by motorcycle will still be allowed in Admin area as usual.

Thank you very much for your kind understanding and cooperation.

 

(ii) Improvement project: Cleaning and Painting of Dorm J Building

Email from OFAM (11 Oct. 2018)

Please be informed that subcontractor will start the improvement project at Dorm J, to clean and paint the exterior and corridors of the building.

Project has started on 12 October 2018 (Friday)
Expected to finish soon.

During this time there may be loud noise and dust around the area work. Residents of Dorm J are requested to close their doors and windows properly. 

Apologies for any inconvenience that it may cause.

After this dorm, we will continue with dorm E and Dorm K, which will be announced later.
