(i) Cautionary Announcement Regarding Dengue Fever
Email from Vice President for Administration (24 Aug. 2019)
Dear Members of our AIT Community,
We want to let you know that, over the weekend, a campus resident was diagnosed with Dengue Fever. It is not clear whether the infection occurred at AIT or elsewhere, but we want to send you the following cautionary information.
Dengue Fever
Incubation period: 2 to 7 days
Dengue Fever is a viral disease spread by certain mosquitoes, namely the "Tiger Mosquito" or "Yung Lai'. The risk can occur all year round in both rural and urban areas (including Bangkok) where mosquitoes commonly breed in containers found around the house such as water storage jars, flowerpots and other receptacles. Normally, tiger mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water and water-filled natural and artificial containers such as cavities in trees, tire casing etc. To prevent it, the first and the most important thing is to eliminate standing water sources and water-filled containers. We would encourage you to please minimize this source in your accommodation units. OFAM does the same on a regular basis around the campus, and it will also immediately do a thorough spraying Monday.
Dengue Fever is characterized by fever, headache, muscle and joint pains (so-called "break-bone fever"), a rash, nausea and vomiting. It may be complicated by Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in which excessive bleeding and shock can occur. Dengue Fever is more common in the rainy season, which is April to December.
Primary Prevention: Minimize the risk of being bitten during the day. Mosquito repellent which is available over the counter is highly recommended. You can also discuss with your Pharmacist.
Please help us reiterate this message at home too, and remind members of your family to take extra precaution when outside.
If you suspect that you or someone you know contracted Dengue Fever, please immediately seek medical treatment from the nearest hospital.
Alternatively, you can also call the AIT Medical Clinic for a primary medical examination at phone number 02-524-5286 during office hours or through its emergency contact number 02-524-5555.
AIT students can call Ms. Tiparatana at the Student Welfare Unit of OSA, at this number 025246744 (office hours) or 0819320757 during non-working hours. For AIA insurance holders, you may contact AIA call center at 1581 or its Hotline number 023538877 in case of an emergency.
We urge you to please take care and heed this advice.
