WEEK# 30, 26 July - 1 August, 2021
In this issue:
1) Latest on COVID-19 and Fall Semester
Email from AIT president on 24 July 2021.
Dear AIT Family:
You have read in a recent AIT COVID-19 Task Force update email that an AIT Contractor staff, Ms. Aye Aye Khaing, passed away from COVID-19 a few days ago. This is very sad news for all of us, as she was a vital front-line team member of our Organizational Quarantine (OQ) facility, since it opened in September 2020, and she had been working for AIT since January, 2018. We have expressed our deep condolences to Ms. Khaing’s family, and I hope that all of us at AIT remember her contributions to the important OQ mission and also always think of the OQ staff who are doing their difficult job daily at the OQ.
Although apparently she contracted the virus from her family outside AIT and not from her OQ work, it nevertheless points out the dangers of this virus. In addition, there have been recent positive cases among our contractors. All this tells us to be super careful and follow the measures implemented by the Thai Government and by AIT.
Thanks to the help of several government departments and Thammasat University Hospital, other than some Thai continuing students who will receive a specific vaccination date any day now, almost all AIT employees and dependents and continuing students are now vaccinated. On 23 July, around 120 AIT contractors successfully received their vaccines too. We have also asked new students to receive their vaccinations before they arrive in Thailand. AIT is in good shape in terms of vaccinations, but with the variants around, caution and preventative measures are still called for.
In two weeks, the Fall Semester will start at AIT when we will welcome all our students, including our new students—whose numbers will match those admitted in August 2020. But due to the COVID situation in Thailand, instruction will be online for at least several weeks into the semester. When in-person classes are permitted by the Thai Government, then Hybrid Instruction with partial in-person students will be the mode of education. We have had very good experience during the pandemic—since Spring 2020—with online and Hybrid Instruction, and we are confident that AIT quality education will continue “without missing a beat”.
The Orientation for the Fall Semester will be online via Zoom on Monday, 9 August, and we will see all our new students at this virtual Orientation. Our OQ continues to operate for our overseas students, and it is hoped that they will gradually be able to come to Thailand to take advantage of our wonderful campus.
Hope all of you stay safe!

2) 100 Innovations x Entrepreneurs : What Drives the Future?
WHAT DRIVES THE FUTURE?
The first 100 Innovations x Entrepreneurs (100X) event was organized by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in 2019 as Southeast Asia’s first Research-to-Commercial conference to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The event also served as the venue to launch AIT’s Entrepreneurship Center, a breeding ground for future business leaders as well as a learning center with the ultimate goal of enhancing economic and social development. As our signature annual event, this year also AIT is organizing the second 100X in a new normal hybrid mode, a combination of online and in-person to also reach out to more people from different parts of the world. The theme for this event is What Drives the Future with a mindset to rethink our future by focusing on how we can improve the basic human needs such as Food, WellBeing, Living, Education, and Communication in context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).We believe that collaboration among different stakeholders: University, Industry, Government, and Civil Society is the key to safeguard our future and each stakeholder has a critical role to play in achieving the SDGs. Through this event, AIT, as one of the stakeholders, is reaching out to the Government, Industry and Civil Society to collaborate with us as co-organizer, partner, and participants.
