A. Announcements
(i) New Dean of School of Management
Prof. Lawrence Steven Abeln has joined the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as the new Dean of School of Management with effect from 1 August 2016. His appointment as Dean was endorsed by the AIT Board of Trustees at its meeting held on 14 July 2016.
Professor Steven Abeln received a Ph.D. in Management (Labor Economics) and M.Phil. in International Relations from Cambridge University, where he was a Rotary Foundation Scholar and member of Pembroke. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude.
Professor Abeln has 22 years of extensive academic leadership experience including working at top 100 QS world-ranked universities including MIT, Cambridge, Texas Austin, Georgetown and Adelaide University. He began his academic career at the MIT Sloan School of Management as the Director of the MBA program, at age 26. He was the youngest Director of any internationally ranked MBA program in the world at the time of his appointment at the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Prior to joining he was the Dean of School of Business, University of Adelaide University, Australia since 2014, where he oversaw around 75 staff members and 5500 undergraduate and postgraduate students - representing around 20 per cent of the university’s total enrolments.
Professor Abeln served from 2007 through 2011 as a member of the Faculty of Management at the University of Cambridge, and as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cambridge Executive Education, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Cambridge which partners in the development and delivery of multi-disciplinary education programs for private and public sector organizations and professionals.
At the University of Cambridge, Dr. Abeln also served as the Deputy Dean (Deputy Director) of the Cambridge Judge Business School and successfully initiated and developed the university’s new Executive MBA with an innovative curriculum, one of the first part-time professional degree programs awarded by the University of Cambridge.
From 2004-2007, Dr. Abeln served as Associate Dean at The University of Texas at Austin School of Business. He was responsible for five of the school’s MBA programs with a degree enrolment of 800 and a portfolio of over 50 Executive Education open enrolment and custom courses. Abeln taught International Management course for the MBAs as a member of the Faculty of Management. He also led the school’s initiative to construct a $135million educational and residential facility for executive education.
Professor Abeln was previously the Associate Dean at Georgetown University responsible for both the MBA and Executive MBA. Abeln implemented a new program curriculum, increased applications significantly (by over 60 percent) and introduced academic technological improvements to the teaching and learning experience. Under his leadership, the Executive MBA ranked in the top ten in Business Week.
Professor Abeln has extensive experience in the media as an economic and financial commentator with over 100 interviews and has written on the trends in graduate management education. He has been quoted in The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The London Times, The Independent and other international publications. He has appeared on ABC, CBS and NBC television and radio affiliates. He also worked previously for KYW-TV and for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. He has moderated and participated in forums with heads of state, government ministers, CEOs and executives of leading companies, and academic leaders.
(ii) 61 graduate at informal inter-semester graduation ceremony
Sixty-one students were awarded degrees at the informal inter-semester graduation ceremony on 27 July 2016. Held two months after AIT’s 125th Graduation ceremony, this informal event saw six doctoral, 43 Master’s and 12 Bachelor’s degrees being awarded.
Graduating students came from 10 countries — India, Indonesia, Iran, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, PR China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Forty-two graduates came from AIT’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET),while 16 came from the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD); two from the School of Management (SOM), and one from a joint SERD-SOM program.

(v) Introducing AIT Events and Visitors Calendar
The Office of Media and Communications (OMCO) has launched a web-based feature for AIT events/visitors. This is a web application (based on Google Calendar and Google Maps) which will list AIT events as well as campus visitors.
It is also linked from the AIT homepage, and it can be accessed here: http://www.ait.ac.th/news-and-events/calendar

(vi) Condolences
The AIT Community would like to express its condolences and sympathies to Mr. Pitak Yaekajorn, Assistant Technician in the Geotechnical and Earth Resources Engineering (GTE) Field of Study, School of Engineering and Technology, whose wife, Mrs. Boonsong Jaimankong, passed away on July 24, 2016 due to blood infection.
Funeral rites and the cremation ceremony were held at Sala Pracharat, Wat Santayaram, Amphur Mueng, Nakhon Nayok Province. : Source: HRO
B. Campus Updates
(i) Renovation of Tennis Court - 1 adjacent to library from 1st August
Please be informed that the Tennis Court - 1 adjacent to library will be closed from 1st August 2016 for the renovation and will at least take 3 months to complete the work.
The renovation of Tennis court-1 involves digging the court surface partially and may also need some extra piles to be laid to level the surface before the court floor is improved. During the renovation, there might be considerable noise and some disturbance on the path way to SU Snack bar and near Lawson-108. : Source: OFAM

(iii) Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Implementation Workshop: 23 – 24 August 2016
A two-day Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Implementation Workshop will be organized on 23-24 August 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.
CAP Workshops focus on emergency alerting, and people interested in emergency alerting are welcome to participate. This includes managers, technical staff, media, commercial organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). There is no workshop participation fees.
Hosts of the 2016 CAP Implementation Workshop are the Asian Institute of Technology and the Sahana Software Foundation.
