A. Announcements
(i) Tragic Death of Prominent AIT Alumnus Mr. Madhav P Ghimire (Former Home and Foreign Minister of Nepal)
Email from AIT President:
1 October 2016
Dear Members of the AIT Community and AIT alumni,
AIT is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of prominent AIT alumnus Mr. Madhav P Ghimire, who died in a tragic car accident on Sunday, 25th September 2016.
A jeep carrying Mr. Ghimire and his family members plunged into the Trishuli river in Nepal while they were returning home after performing a religious annual commemorative ceremony in Kagbeni of Mustang. The Kathmandu-bound jeep had veered off the road and plunged into the river at Dahrechok-3 in Chitwan district.
Mr. Ghimire reached the pinnacle of his career in the Government of Nepal, having held numerous high-ranking positions, namely as Minister for Home and Foreign Affairs; Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretary), Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers; Secretary of the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction; Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation; Secretary of the Ministry of General Administration.
It is still in my memory when I and AIT Ex-Com Chair Dr. Sahas Bunditkul paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Mr. Madhav Prasad Ghimire on 18 July 2013, at the time he served as Nepal Foreign Minister. Minister Ghimire has given his assurances in expediting the Government's supports for Nepalese nationals to pursue their higher studies at AIT.
Mr. Ghimire completed his Master’s degree in Human Settlements and Development (HSD) from the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD), AIT in 1992. Along with Prof. Karl E. Weber, he is the co-editor of a book titled “Bibliography on Environmental Studies” published by AIT in 1993. He was awarded the best alumni award in 2005 by the AIT Alumni Association at its annual meting held in Indonesia.
In the sudden demise of Mr. Ghimire, AIT has lost an exemplary alumnus and close friend, who contributed greatly in furthering AIT's relations with the Government of Nepal. On behalf of all members of the AIT community, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Ghimire's family and kin, and we pray for courage and strength in this most difficult period of bereavement.
Sincerely,
Professor Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai
President
