A. Announcements

 

1)  Appointment of the new Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD)

Email from AIT President sent on 3 March 2023

 

 I am pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Abdul Salam as the new Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD).

Prof. Salam is currently a Professor in the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change (EECC).  He has been a faculty member of SERD since 2009

Prof. Salam will assume the post on 1 April 2023 working closely with the Vice President for Academic Affairs. I trust that Prof. Salam will be able to lead the School in gaining a higher academic reputation, as well as finding a way for the School to embark on a re-positioning by leveraging innovation in education and rebuilding faculty strength, paying specific attention to quality and diversity.

Please join me in congratulating and supporting Prof. Salam in this new role.

Prof. Vilas Nitivattananon will continue to serve as the School Dean until 31 March 2023 and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Prof. Vilas Nitivattananon for diligently serving as the School Dean. He has carried well and dedicated his time as Dean during the challenging period of Covid-19 pandemic. He will remain with us as a faculty member, and we want to give him our appreciation at this time.

2) Online the stakeholder workshop for the Plastic Free Rivers Mekong Project [7-9 March]

The UN Environment Programme in Asia and the Pacific is organizing the “Promotion of Community Resilience Against Plastic Pollution and Climate Change in the Mekong River Basin” stakeholder workshop on 7-9 March 2023. The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is one of the  partners in this project under the Office of Vice President for Knowledge Transfer. During the event, AIT is also supporting as a technical partner for the hybrid format.

AIT President Professor Kazuo Yamamoto will give his welcome remarks during the opening session on March 7. The Governor of Bangkok Dr. Chadchart Sittipunt and Ms. Dechen Tsering, Regional Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific UN Environment Programme will give welcome remarks during the opening session as well.

AIT Professors and Experts will present during this three-day workshop. Emeritus Professor Chettiyappan Visvanathan will present the Technology & Innovative Solutions Inventory Report for Preventing and Managing Plastic Pollution. Dr. Atitaya Panuvatvanich will share the Assessment of Community Resilience and Capacity Building against Plastic Pollution and Climate Change. Mr. Sriram Reddy Mandhati will explain the AI-Enabled CCTVs for Monitoring Floating Plastic Litter in Thailand and Vietnam: Enhancing Community Resilience.

The event will highlight project achievements in driving capacity building on the assessment and monitoring of riverine plastic pollution while strengthening community resilience to plastic pollution and climate change.

In-depth discussions will cover the following:

  • Enhanced international cooperation and stakeholder engagement for investment growth and uptake of plastic pollution prevention measures by national and local governments, civil society organizations and financial institutions;
  • Increased investment, with participation of local businesses, in new technologies at the community level to mitigate climate change and plastic pollution, as demonstrated in specific riverine communities in Thailand and Vietnam;
  • A network of regional experts, stakeholders, and community representatives to effectively implement the protocols for Riverine Microplastic and Macroplastic Monitoring in the Mekong River/Basin, while understanding the impacts of climate change and plastic pollution on livelihoods in select communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic;
  • Capacity building plans including mapping of climate change and plastic pollution impacts on riverine communities in Lower Mekong, and ensuring access to national source inventories on marine litter and micro-plastic management;
  • Innovative technologies and best practices to reduce the impacts of climate change and plastic pollution, shown and documented in select communities in Thailand for replication; and
  • Strengthened community awareness, training and implementation plans on new technologies and best practices for plastic waste reduction, management and upscaling of best practices to mitigate climate change impacts

4) A workshop on “Introduction to Scopus and Mendeley for Research.”

AIT Library, in collaboration with Elsevier, would like to invite you to a workshop on “Introduction to Scopus and Mendeley for Research.”  The session will provide you with a basic knowledge of Scopus and Mendeley which is one of the greatest tools to help you in finding and analyzing journals.
